Hi All.

Was driving my FR TFSI DSG last night. Went to overtake someone doing 30 along straight of national speed limit B road and as I passed the car started vibrating or juddering violently.
Best way to describe it is those speed strips on approaches to roundabouts off fast bits of road. Literally the car was shaking up and down.

I dropped to about 40mph and they lessened. It felt like my wheels were goign to come off.
Pulled up in a carpark and checked the car over. Wheels fine but the engine was making a pretty grim noise like it wasn't running on all 4 and the exahsut noise was more tinnny and mechanical.

Thought I could smell fuel. Every time I accelerated afterward it felt like it was going to go BOOM! and the engine light started flashing violently. Manged to nurse it home.

Any ideas?

First thought was the DSG gear box ie the clutches or something to do with the engine being starved of fuel on acceleration. Saying that when revving in neutral it made a funny noise but did not judder much!

H.E.L.P!

ps out of warranty by a couple of months! JOY!

Have you not got VCDS to plug it in?

If you've checked all the obvious things ie plugs, oil etc. then I'd get it towed to a dealer or indie - anything metallic sounding can only get worse...

we could with knowing where the car was shaking from the most, was ti in the stering wheel or did it feel more like the engine was about to drop out?

Sounds like Misfiring...faulty coil pack however im only assuming from the ways your describing and what I have experienced in the past (you VCD to check the problem) but im pretty sure its the coil pack especially if the engine light was flashing.

good luck mate.

id say coil pack too - one went on my passat - the RAC guy that came out had a genuine part on the van as it's so common for them to go.

Lads,

as ever thanks for the feedback

This happened last night so not had time to hook it up to my diagnostics kit!
Just been worrying (as i'm sure you can appreciate) so thought I'd break up the waiting by asking you lot.

There was a lot of feedback through the steering wheel, hence checking my wheels being the first thing I did. But I have a feeling it was the engine block trying to jump through the bonnet under load. When I was neutral revving could only pick out a change in note and had no feedback through the the wheel.

@ Graham, nah mate. Not hit anything at all! Went on a 'spirited' back road drive on saturday was running smooth as you like. As it was on sunday prior to going to the pub. It's when I dropped my mate off and was going down a striaght bit of smooth road that it just went on me!

I know about the coilpack issues because when I used to be on cupranet every minute of the day I noticed a lot of people mentioning it. I will run scans tonight get the engine cover off and check the fuel pump and any other tubes to make sure nothing has come free.

Fingers crossed it's nothing major! can't say I have the cash for a new DSG gear box lying around! :wtf:

I had this problem about two weeks ago on my Altea FR TFSI DSG, and until you sort it everything runs through your head.

I couldn't understand how it was fine on the way to work then started the car to go home and the juddering began. When I pulled out the coils water had been getting in coil 1 so I replaced that as it was all rusted but this didn't sort out the problem, then I replaced all the spark plugs, again still had a problem.

Finally I managed to find my VAG-COM cable and it turns out it was cylinder 4 misfiring. Luckily I hadn't thrown the coil from cylinder 1 so I put that back and the new one in 4 and we were good to go, but talk about a headache and a lot of running around to get it sorted.

I think it might have had something to do with water as I removed my engine cover about a year ago to fit a EVOMS intake and now the coils are a bit exposed, I just bought a spare engine cover from ebay to hack so fingers crossed it never happens again.

Hope you get yours sorted first time, god bless VAG-COM:)

Right guys,

Ran the diagnostics:

Basically saying 'multiple/random missfiring cylinders' as one fault.
another fault is 'misfires in cylinder 3'...

what could be possible things causing this?
Would it be a major no no driving it 10miles to my car guy or should I tow?

I'll be honest the engine block is literally bouncing like it is fed up being under my bonnet and wants to run off! Hoping it is a case of coil packs. Despite starting that VAG COM thread I'm not exatly an expert on it. Does anyone know of any cylinder specific logs I can do to check which is the culprit? Does it strike anyone as a bit weird that it had two different fault reports one for 'multiple/random missfires' then one that specifically stated "cylinder 3"?

Mine reported a random multiple misfire and then also the misfire on cylinder 4 so that must just be how it reports the fault as when I changed coil 4 both errors went
away.

Well I did the checks myself, and I don't touch my local (preston) dealer with a barge pole. I use ADS Global aka Frank Massey's. They said they'd replace all the spark plugs and coil packs. I'm sourcing the coil packs off everybody's friend Dave @seremotors. he mentioned the NGK spark plugs having issues. Anyone recommend a decent set for me to put in? Not spending much money at all as i will be selling up soon! (company car has made the leon redundant)

i say lies... i only replaced one... and it was fine and has been since...

Don't waste your money especially if you are getting rid of it anyway, I replaced the spakplugs as I hadn't found the faulty coil, but had I just run the diagnostics first it would have just cost me the £38 for the coil and it's easy to do yourself.
