VW Passat Estate TDI – Silver can go bling bling

This detail has been on the cards for a while however life being life things get delayed. However August was the month chosen and thankfully the gods favoured us with nice dry weather. JamieBennet81 turned up and presented me with his new car that drinks the devils fuel.

In terms of size this is probably one of the biggest cars I have detailed since the 5 series BMW I done at the start of the year. Having not detailed a car in the last few months I was very conscious that the detail ahead, especially the actual correction phase, was not rushed. The biggest problem with cars that have big panels is you tend to try and do too much in one go. This results in poor correction because the polish isn’t worked in enough or spread too thinly. With this in mind I have my tools layed out in front of me.

Time was really against me that day so I got cracking straight away with only a planned 20 minute break at 12pm.

The bugs were soaked with Megs APC and those pressure washed off easy enough.

The dirt here came from underneath the silver trim in volume! This seems to be the norm on these estate cars so I paid extra attention to get out all the dirt.

Bird poo that caked itself on. I was quite worried that it may have stained the lacquer with the amount of Sun we had but thankfully it came off easy enough.

Car is showing signs of improvement already now it’s been thoroughly cleaned.

I tested several pad combinations and found that P203S with a Sonus Swirl Buster Pad gave a really good level of correction with a lovely shiny finish. I initially was going to settle for the Menzerna Intensive polish but I found that it was drying up really quickly and I also felt that it was a tad too aggressive in its finish. With the swirl buster pad the finish was poor and it did not cut enough with a Menzerna Heavy Polishing pad.

The rear lights were pretty dull and swirled. I don’t think the pictures really caught the state they were in well enough but the after picture shows the end result pretty well.

Time for phase two – you got to love the smell of this stuff.

SEAL TO PROTECT

This is one product I simply don’t use often enough. I am really not sure why because it amazes me every time I use it.

First time I ever used Autoglym HD. What an amazing product from Autoglym. I must say this is the easiest wax to apply I ever used and the finish for me is nearly as good as the old P21S but with far superior durability. I would recommend this wax all day long, especially for people who are put off by waxes because of the time it take to put on and take off.

Detailers Notes
- Ziano Z2 pro - I do think you have to be a little more liberal than Ziano say to get a good even coverage.
- Most applicator pads that come with AG HD Wax are superb. I cant believe how well the moist pad takes the wax off and on the paint work so easy.

well what can I say.....WOW in one word to sum it up

I think it is quite difficult to get the the point across as to how good the car looked after the detailing, as silver is the worst colour for reflection, but great for hiding scratches and stone chips etc

The paint was OK, but for a car now almost ten years old, when looking close up, there were swirl marks, tiny scratches etc all over it, and actually looked pretty poor, which again is very hard to see in the pictures

Having never had anything like this done before, I was a little nervous, not in a bad way, but as in what to expect. I chose Maz based on his work before and he has produced excellent and consistent results, he was local to me but most importantly shares that car passion for getting the best result

So I dropped off the car around 09:30 (sorry, kids and leaving early dont mix sometimes mate) and me and the family went to London for the day. I was really excited to see the results on my return. Walking back to Maz's house, I turned the corner and my girlfriend immediatley said "wow" which was clearly echoed with the smile on my face

The results are excellent. The car looks totally renewed and refreshed, and the paint felt totally glass like to touch, and looked as if it had just rolled out of the factory.

Unfortunately someone keyed the car a little while ago, and the only way to completely make it disappear was a whole body respray, but having seen the miracle work Maz has produced on the scratch, you can barely see it, and is a massive improvement

I would highly recommend his work to anyone. Really friendly, and the results are just excellent. Even though my car looks fairly standard, I can at least now go to shows with paintwork in far superior condition than a fast car with big wheels on etc. I think for me the detail is in the attention, and Maz has this down to a T!

It was also nice to have a good chat afterwards, discussing products etc and how best to clean the car ensuring its kept in tip top condition

My whole driveway needs redoing. The cowboys who had the house before me done a few things like the driveway on the cheap.

It was looking great but now has a sheet of crap and dust from working opposite a sewage works and a waste disposal site! FFS!!

Snowfoam and a pressure wash should get most of it off. Just be careful how much snowfoam you put in the mix - no more than an inch in the bottle (I normal put 3/4 of an inch in the bottle). You dont want a strong dilution as it may strip protection.

never knew that it is not like Dodo juice shampoos that are not meant to strip wax off then (after each wash I would re-apply wax anyway)
