I did a 200 or so mile round trip from Surrey to Leicester yesterday and got 56 from the car computer using Esso Supreme diesel, included a really long, annoying 50mph roadworks section on the M1. Not too bad I guess, was hoping to better 60 though. Really wish I had plumped for adaptive cruise control now!

I went to Esso this morning and the Supreme Diesel was 10p per litre more expensive. I decided to go for the normal diesel as I didn't believe I will get a mpg high enough to justify the extra £4.40 I would have paid.

That was the first time I had bought it - usually go for the regular diesel but was curious if I could feel a difference in performance. At my servo it was only 5p more expensive though. Was there any difference? I think so but will ask the Mrs as she is using it today and I didn't tell her I put the expensive fuel in...

Good choice, you won't get any more miles out of esso supreme diesel than normal esso diesel, the only real difference is the supreme has twice as much detergent in it compared to the normal esso derv

Fuel economy has been pretty decent in my 1.4 TSI 125PS recently:

Quite regularly see the below, part town, part country roads.

I've started seeing mid-high 60's on my 184. Low 60's are now a daily occurrence and tank-to-tank isn't actually far off what the computer is indicating.

So for anyone looking to improve the economy of the 184, my top tip is to put 23K miles on it first :D

That's how long mine has taken to get MPG anywhere near the quoted figures :)

Thanks. Got 27k and I can't get more than 51 mpg on average on a full tank. But it depends on so many factors... Mine's always in Sport mode btw. I couldn't really see much difference between Eco and Sport.

My 1.8 mk3 does about 26 mpg city start stop and 32 mpg long range
My 1.8 ST ranges from 27mpg to 36mpg. This is full tank (brim to brim) averages over 6k miles according to Fuelio app. If I did a whole tank of sensible motorway then I'm sure it would get into high 30s.

In dash counters are not that far off.

Yeah, same here regarding the sport mode. I didn't buy the sportier model to have lighter steering and dumb down the accelerator pedal.

I'm 'lucky' in that 99% of my mileage is commuting and I have 2 miles of town driving before sitting on a dual carriageway for 36 miles, half of which is covered by average speed cameras so the engine is barely getting worked and I'm able to travel at a constant speed.

I drive it more like a hire car when I'm not in 'commute' mode. :D

EDIT: FWIW I found that fitting GY EfficientGrip Performance tyres made a difference to the MPG, maybe 2-3 MPG improvement within a few hundred miles of having them fitted to the fronts. The rears are still the factory fitted Conti SC 5's which are noisy and I can't wait to replace them too.

You found it improved with time then?
I'd always taken that claim with a large pinch of salt when I see folks claiming the engine needs to bed in.

I'm about to hit 10k, holding around 50-52 at the moment.

Not sure if that's the warmer weather, the engine loosening up, the way I'm driving changing with mpg in mind....

I went from a 5dr 150 FR which from new could hit 60 MPG, within 6 months it was high 60's. I part-ex'd it for 184 ST and that was low 50's from almost new and I've had it a year now and the economy has improved significantly. Tank range has gone from 520-30 to 590-600.

It's just a shame the interior trim has loosened up at the same rate as the engine ;)

Yes, I fully agree. I could drive a bit more sensibly to try to hit 30 in city driving but I can't be bothered to be honest.

I'm very happy to be getting 30 mpg average, my previous 4x4 did something like 8mpg so anything bettet is a plus!

Quite a way for me then yet, i've only got 6500 on mine and get 47mpg in town and about 55mpg on a motorway run so will look forward to it getting better.
