What the f*ck, it takes my car about 15-20 mins for the oil temp to read 80-90*, the water temp is upto 90 loooong before the oil. Needless to say I always wait until at least 80 before boosting heavily.

Better to be safe than sorry!

Being as your back on the subject. Im not despiting that. If you read my prevoius posts im just highlighting the fact that the car must be warmed up before you can rag it. This is perfetic as long as HADZ knows not to rag his engine when cold then situation solved. ;)

Yep

Hi guys .. while on the subject i sit in my car idling away when i start it up until the needle falls below 1000rpm before i drive off, as when u start it it moves above, is this correct? I also allow 2-4mins of cooling down before i switch it off after a hard drive .. normally the fan comes on for 30seconds, thats when i switch it off?

flashbsd is correct. :D the difference is much greater than 5 degrees. when water hits 90 my oil temp has been 60! so using the coolant temp to work out if the engines at normal operating temp isnt accurate.

id give at least 10 mins before id consider mine warm as thats when my oil temp gauge hits normal. 95-100.

tech to be is right about the variance at normal speeds IMO but not at how quick the temps rise. i guess water heats up much quicker than oil.

for a laugh... and learning experience for those who have'nt seen it before.

find your local long hill.... blat up it on full boost, get to the top, stop, open the bonnet, (DONT TURN THE ENGINE OFF), have a good look at the back of the engine bay area.... glowing red/yellow

Now would you want to switch off the life support to the glowing turbo at this time? - coolant and oil supply..

It takes ages for it to cool back from glowing..

Hot shut downs account for premature bearing failures. Thats why its not a good thing to do.

did i read somewhere that theres a coolant pump that keeps going for a bit after you turn off? is that for the engine? or am i talking twaddle :hide:

on some models yes.. ibiza's have em.

traumapat yeah its a funny buzzing noise when you turn the engine off, although as bill says, best to let it cool under normal driving for a few mins or your shutting off hot.

My last car had a turbo timer, and it was very handy, but now i just look silly when all my passengers are out and im waiting 30 secs before turn off. always do ;)

yep... same here. get puzzelled looks from everyone. even the missus and she knows why im still sitting there! nice when you finally switch off and feel the need to explain... "well you see, it has a turbo, you see, yes... thats right like a porcshe, and the thing about turbos......"

glad i know for sure what that ticking is!
