Hey everyone.

Just completed an almost perfect 500 mile trip in my 2006 Altea xl 2.0tdi which has 58k on the clock. car went really well apart from an annoying occasional problem;

when I am doing 70mph in 6th gear on a straight piece of motorway, not accelerating or decelerating (just holding it steady) the car will sometimes give the feeling like you have just let your foot off the accelerator then gone back on it to the same position as before but only for a split second, a sort of hesitation i suppose.
But apart from that the car drives perfectly, accelerates hard without problem etc.

I did have some hesitation problems a couple of months before but this was obvious as when you accelerated in say 3rd gear it would only get to 50mph then hesitate badly and go no faster. This i had fixed (eventually) by Seat Tonbridge Wells, turning out to be a blocked fuel filter, in their opinion through use of supermarket diesel.

as the car only hesitates about twice in 500 miles I dont see the point in taking it to Seat as im sure they will be unable to replicate fault.

I am eager to sort it out even though its only minor as we will be going to the south of France in it in a month so dont fancy a break down then!

My first thought was possibly the rest of what ever sludge was in the tank is starting to block the new fuel filter and so I may change it again if I can work out how, or possibly this is the very early start of MAF failure?

Has anyone else had a similar problem to me? any thoughts would be appreciated especially from anyone who thinks this sounds familiar.

Cheers

Rob

Thanks for that I ordered one of those gaskets and fitted it today, too early to say if it's worked but I swear it's idling better already. It's a 140 but the link seemed to have others with that engine and it fitted fine. Took 2 mins. Dealer said it was a modification for hesitationon various diesel seat models.

Cheers for reply it's very helpful.

im getting a hesitation when sitting in lowish revs (around 1.5k) and wondering if this is the onset of injector failure?

I would try using a fuel cleaner first, one you put the whole bottle in a tank.
How bad is your car hesitating? Mine is only slight every now and then. I would have thought a failing injector would cause a miss fire.
If your hesitation is only slight try putting the modified egr gasket on. I just have and car seems smoother already. Guy at seat dealer confirmed that the gasket was a modified item for cars with hesitation problems.

My 2.0 140 has always had a hesistant spot since the day I collected it.

I can best replicate it by accelerating down a sliproad onto the motorway. When I hit the speed that I am happy to be at, and stop accelerating as such , I can get a wee touch of hesitancy.

Never does it when I am full on accelerating or anything, just when I am levelling off the accelerator.

That sounds like mine. It accelerates fine (moderately or hard) but I have found it's most obvious when you are on a motorway and cruise at a given speed, and like you say it happen most often if you slow down after a turn of speed and let off the gas you just get a slight blip. It isn't a bad hesitation.

Have you tried doing the egr gasket modification? I have not been able to replicate the hesitation since I fitted it Friday although obviously it's early days yet. I feel it has improved my cold starting a little, when starting cold it fires almost instantly but when it does start it sort of splutters up to idle and after a few seconds will idle fine, since I changed the gasket it seems to start cold better.

Have you looked at the above link which a kind person put up? It seems to have a lot of good results for similar problems.

I have only had some hesitation/ missing on one occasion at low speed, i think it was a couple of months later that the intake manifold flap failed and i had it replaced by the dealers under warranty. Haven't felt anything like it since then

In relation to my intake flap failing i made my own restrictor plate (that thread hadn't been posted yet) and fitted that to try and stop the new flap getting gummed up. Seems to be doing a good job as i took it all apart last weekend to clean, only issue is that it throws up the check engine light every now and then

mine only does it at around 1500-1900RPM and gives the "learner driver" rocking sensation despite maintaining a steady foot on the accelerator... ive noticed that the two pipes behind the fogs (on each site) seem to have oilly residue on the seals around the join, and have read that the gasket chage (to the smaller one) can help solve this.... any suggestions as ot where ot start first?

well, ive ordered the part mentioned at the begining of the thread, and will clean out the EGR at the same time. and see how things go.

Toxic - would the oil travel from the breather to the intercooler pipes without leaving a trace of the leak anywhere else?
