wet carpets

we have had lots of heavy rain in the last few days and today I have found the rear carpet damp and signs of water on top of the sill trim inside the door/ and pooled inside the rubber door/body seal.
I have read the thread on the door skin/card seal but on investigation my door is different.
It has only the inner plastic panel which is held by 1 screw at the centre of the bottom edge and 2 inside the closing handle plus several L shaped plastic lugs moulded to the inner plastic trim/card

. To remove the panel you remove 3 screws and lift the plastic panel up & off.
There is no inner metal panel/card or any plastic sheet only a butyl rubber seal the goes all round the inner plastic trim/card set in a groove which doesnt seem to press very well on the door skin.
My question is should there be a nylon sheet ?My former car a saxo have plastic inside the door between the inner trim card and the door skin
I know the door was repaired before I bought the car and the trim would have been removed

Yes there is nothing else there.

Check the outer rubber seal at the window.

I think it this seal that does 90% of the job.

I assume you mean the seal on the top of the outer door skin where it meets the window and not the very top of the door against the bodywork above the window.
It looks like a felt seal and on my car doesnt push against the glass very much,this door had some accident damage prior to me buying it and I know it was stripped to push the outer skin back out (someone reversed into the door in a car park and buggered off)
Also noticed 2 of the lugs on the door card nearest the lock side are broken which may impact on how well the trim presses on the door skin squashing the butyl seal


I have found by looking through many posts my door/car is a mark 5 type door card fitment

thanks for your pictures DM 222 looking at your photos of the bottom of the door mine doesnt seem much different.there is a small gap between the door card and the door skin which I assume is taken up by the butyl seal.
We have had some more rain since I put some silecone behind the trim.When i checked it afterwards there were one or two spots of water on the door skin below the internal trim wear it returns to meet the outer door skin and some water inside the large main body seal along the step area.
it gets trapped there as it is a sort of u shape with no way to drain.I assume it shouldnt get wet in the first place.Interestingly my other rear door seal is the same (wet),both the front ones were dry

My only experience of a late 2009 Ibiza SC, so only two doors, there has been very little attempt made by SEAT to seal the outside top of the door skin at the lower end of the windows, to water getting in, but in the case of my daughter's car, it runs out again through drain holes in the bottom of the front doors. I did read some reports from 4 door and ST Ibizas also having rain water running out the bottom of the doors when you open them, so, if water is getting in at the top of the door area where the lower window seal is, it should run out the bottom again both at the front doors and the rear, so maybe check that there are no blockages at the drainage points maybe?

Yes sometimes I get some water comming from the drain holes while opening the door, but it is something very residual.

To me it just seems insuficient the seal between the door cards and the door, in some parts I have a clearence between them and water doesnt get in so I guess it is the outside seal between the door and glass that does most of the job.

this morning I have managed to lift the carpet behind the drivers seat (lh drive car ) and found the sound deadening material damp until under the drivers seat,next job remover drivers seat but it has started to rain hard again and I am outside.
my plan is to remove the seat and see how far the damp progresses towards the front of the car.There is no sign of wet front carpet and the front door/ body seals are bone dry.I therefore assume the water is getting in via rear doors as these body seal are full of water in the upturned part of the seal,I guess they must be filling up with water making its way past the door card and overflowing inwards into the car.
I could be wrong and usually am

2013 Toledos had a problem with the rear doors filling with water and then spilling into the car. The drain holes in the bottom of the doors were often blocked with wax from the factory. Also the rubber seals on the bottom were too big and needed trimming. Both factors caused water retention but were easily rectified.

In between rain showers removed the drivers seat and lifted properly the rear carpet.I then cut the underneath sound deadening material to save dismantling the console,it is now indoors to dry.later whilst it was raining I sat in the car and can confirm water is coming in via the rear door seal/inner sill area.Without the carpet and plastic sill trim I could see water pooling on top of the inner sill and running into the rear footwell.
when opening the door the body seal was again full of water and if I looked under the door card I could see water running down from the card below the radio speaker area.
This may have been water that had got there from the body seal or may be from inside of the door card.I thought I had sealed the card to the door frame with silecone.
The other rear footwell had a minute amount of water in the sound deadening material so I lifted it to air but it was not bad enough to remove it,both front footwells are dry.
I really dont know what is the answer but it may end up in a trip to the main dealers to see if they can fix it

I think that many people have used silicon sealer, but only certain types seem to work well, especially plumbers ones that can be applied while the mating surfaces are wet. I think that applying sealer over the top of that area is not good enough, you probably need to separate the inner "layer", clean it up then apply the correct sealer and fix the "layer" back to the door frame.

Luckily I don't know much about how these door have been assembled, but if you look back on the previous version of Ibiza/Polo/Fabia forums, there will be pages and pages on which way is the best way to solve this problem - that is if it not just down to blocked door drains.

I have check the holes in the bottom of the door (there are 2) and the ones behind the lower edge of the door trim/card and they are all clear.
I have found a thread on removing mk5 panels and see you need to remove the window assembly to completely remove the door card.I will have a go at this when the weather improves and clean it up well and apply the correct silecone.
I now have the airbag light on permenrtly as I turned on the ignition whilst the seat was out
