What do you think would suit me?

You are not doing enough long distance driving to warrant a diesel. The engine wont even be warm in 5 miles.

If you want a car with a little bit of poke, will give a decent MPG return, looks enough of the part and will be insurace friendly enough for your age then go for a petrol and a 1.4 Tsi Sport.

125Bhp

40 mpg return on my 14mile round commute to work on a daily basis
Had upwards of 50 mpg on the motorway on a run

Look for a well specced one, then you only have to retrofit FR bumpers

I had a diesel fr about 3-4 years ago and was only doing the same sort of mileage to work and found after awhile the diesel particulate filter kept coming up on the dash a lot so had to drive for 10/15 minutes each time to burn it off and get the light to go out so decided to get a petrol so I didn't have the problem so it's a thought before buying a diesel.

what petrol car do you have if you dont mind me asking?

Very nice! ;) what sort for mpg are you getting on that? That's the main bit that's putting me off cause I want something that's quick, average/good mpg and nice looking (I guess I can only dream eh?!) lol

On the motorway which I don't really do a lot of you can get in to the 30's but around the towns and stuff if drops in to the 20's but as I don't really do much mileage so it doesn't really affect me much to be honest.

Excuse my rough maths and assumptions:

If you are doing 5mi commute (10mi a day total) =50mi/week commute + any social 50mi/week(?) = 2250commute (assuming 7wks hols) + 2500social /year = 5250mi / year?

If you have a petrol car that does an average of 28mpg you'll use:
187.50Gallons/year = 851.25litres = £1088.74 @127.9p

If you have a diesel car that averages 45mpg you'll use:
116.567gallons/year = 529.68litres = £714.54 @134.9p

The difference then will be £7.20/wk to have more fun in a petrol :) When you then factor in you can get a lower milage, probably better spec'd car for the same money or less by going for a performance petrol... I'd say it's worth it!

+1 for a tsi. You can get one in Fr spec although only later models.

You must be one of the unlucky ones who has expensive insurance. A 1.6tdi much more expensive than a 2.0l turbo petrol for me!

I think you petrol guys have made me change my mind! So bearing these facts and figures in mind , for around 7/8k what sort of spec is reasonable?

I bought mine 3 years ago as a 1year old car, paid £8750 for it

As well as the dual zone climate control, electric everything (windows/mirrors etc), mine came with Bluetooth, rear parking sensors and the auto dimming mirror

Since then I've retrofitted a RNS-510 Nav unit, so ended up with all the toys.

Look for a facelift car circa 2010/2011 with Bluetooth & the large MFD, that should be obtainable for £7K/£8K money!

Really? I assumed maybe a 2009 roughly for that sort of money? Is mileage an issue on them years? (10/11)

Not an exactly comparison but I think my old 1.2TSi was £7500 at a year old with about 12k miles on it. It had no added equipment though.

I'd be using V power tho and that'd cost more than tractor fuel

Just dug my invoice out. Bought mine from a Ford main dealer, not a SEAT main dealer.

Invoice dated 5/Nov/2011.

Price of the Leon £8891, plus vehicle check & 12 month VED fee = £9119.99

Got £1300 trade in on the 2002 reg Focus I had, so cost to change was £7819.99

My car was registered on 16 Jan 2010, so was 21 months old at that point.
I got a very good deal I thought!

Must be losing it a bit as I thought it was earlier than November when I bought it lol

Fair point about the vPower. I gave that up when I traded in my Jap Import. Not sure about the Mk2 LCR but surely the spec for a std CUPRA only calls for 95RON? After that it's preference :)

I think it say 95ron but recommended 97-99ron for remapped etc

I have 95ron and 99ron maps on my car, I always use V power, probably would even if my cupra was standard

2.0TFSI fuel cap sticker states 98 (95) ron. The 98 being larger lettering, making its preference clear! I use Vpower only as it is mapped and shell is on the way to work.

1.4TSI is a good option for a first car, but you'll find more 2.0s. Go for petrol unless you do over 15k miles per year.
