its fairly obvious, isn't it?

if you want to remove the center trim, the handbrake is in the way, so you can remove this bit if trim so the handbrake can pass through

I thought at one point that it might give some access to adjust the handbrake cable. But nevermind lol....

It's a good place to brush all the dirt into, and then put the lid back on
