golf mk4 1,8t has the same water pump as the leon 1,8T (LC/LCR), you have to take of the Timing belt if you want to replace the water pump.
 
when you have the timing belt of you remove the water pump from the top. maybe you do a seach for timing belt guide/DIY or something, then you can see how much work you need to get to it, if you like.
