Hi,

I got some Castrol Edge oil the other day for my 55 plate 1.9 (150) tdi FR. I've checked the website and I'm a bit confused why Castrol has recommended this oil.

The oil that the Castrol website recommends is 'Edge 5W30' (http://castroledge.com/oil-range/5w-30). I thought the oil should be VW 505 01 spec - which this doesn't appear to be. But there's another oil called 'EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40' (http://castroledge.com/oil-range/turbo-diesel-5w-40) which does match that spec.

So, am I missing something here or is the website wrong?

Thanks
Richard

Castrol Edge 5W-30 is VW 505.00, as it says on the page you linked to. This is NOT suitable for your PD engine.

Castrol Edge Turbodiesel 5W-40, according to the page you've linked to, is the one you want.

If you go for their recommendation page and pick Seat Leon 1.9 TDI PD it lists both, which is clearly an error.

Thanks, I'm going to go and swap it for the Turbodiesel 5W-40.

For reference I emailed Castrol about this and they've just got back to me. Here's the reply:

I have two Leon listed

Make SEAT
Model Leon 1.9 TDi (110kW)
Engine DT
Year 1998 - 2005
Application Engine (DT)
Recommendation EO VWG 505.00 15W-40

Make SEAT
Model Leon 1.9 TDI Syncro (110kW)
Engine DT
Year 2002 - 2006
Application Engine (DT)
Recommendation EO VWG 505.00 15W-40

As you can see, both have the most basic diesel spec - the Tdi was a fairly basic engine. The PD engine was introduced around 2000 and that needed 505 01 to 2003 because of issues with the camshafts. After that the problem was sorted so the 505 01 spec became a standard specification for cars on fixed servicing without DPF units - cars with DPF and those with variable ( longlife ) servicing needed the 507 00 specification

We are happy to use the longlife servicing product 5W-30 507 00 across the board and it will cover 505 01 so quite acceptable to use it. However, if the vehicle has done a few miles or burns a little oil then the EDGE Turbo diesel 5W-40 would in my opinion be a better oil to use for your car if it's an easy job to swop it - assuning you are doing a drain and refill ?

For top up purposes, the EGE 5W-30 is perfectly fine, so no need to return it

Hope that helps

Their analysis is wrong.

The 110kW engine (ARL the TDI 150) was in Leons and Toledos from 2001.
The 110kW engine is a PD engine.
VAG have never acknowledged a camshaft problem with any PD engine, and the manufacturer's spec for 1.9 PD's remains 505.01.

I suspect they are confusing it with the 82kW engine, the TDI 110, which is a non-PD engine and uses 505.00 oil.

But they really should know better.
