if you use a low sulphur fuel does that lower the mpg?
Hmmm... I'm no expert, but IIRC the removal of the sulphur I think lowers the density slightly and so could affect MPG, but the biggest prob with the removal of the sulphur is that it acted as a lubricant for the pump and injector system, which is why diesel has to now have additives to replace the lubrication qualities of the sulphur particles. There was panic when low-suplhur diesel first came out and horror stories of supermarket (ie. cheap and no-additives) diesel causing premature injector-pump wear out and failure. Millers et al became very popular at this time! All I know is that my Leon is mucho smoother on old-style diesel on the continent than anything I put in it in the UK.
