which diesel?

if you use a low sulphur fuel does that lower the mpg?

Hmmm... I'm no expert, but IIRC the removal of the sulphur I think lowers the density slightly and so could affect MPG, but the biggest prob with the removal of the sulphur is that it acted as a lubricant for the pump and injector system, which is why diesel has to now have additives to replace the lubrication qualities of the sulphur particles. There was panic when low-suplhur diesel first came out and horror stories of supermarket (ie. cheap and no-additives) diesel causing premature injector-pump wear out and failure. Millers et al became very popular at this time! All I know is that my Leon is mucho smoother on old-style diesel on the continent than anything I put in it in the UK. :)

biofuel is ok for mpg, slightly better if anything as far as I can tell, although I've been using 20l containers as needed rather than brimming the tank as before. Does smell like a chip shop on a cold start though.

Mines a 52 plate (03 reg). I've not got it with me but I believe the manual says biodiesel should be ok if it meets appropriate standards. I've seen it mentioned that later versions of the manual removed this comment. I get it from Turbobits who are based in Lapford in Devon. The owner apparently runs his new caravell tdi on 100% biodiesel.
