Shell only do diesel extra now I believe. I always use shell, as its the same price as sainsbury's and tesco's in my area....so its a no brainer :)

My shell garage only does the Extra also, as said above, same price as the supermarket rubbish so why go elsewhere! My local BP is 2p a litre dearer so they aint getting my business! Mix in some of the Millers Diesel Sport 4 and it's as good as ultimate!

I've done about 100 litres of 50/50 bio/fossil followed more recently by 100 litres of 100% biodiesel (EN certified) in a revo chipped mark ** ibiza (130BHP tdi sport). Changed the fuel filter in a service just after starting using mix. no problems so far .....

I used BP Ultimate at a STUPID 103p per litre..had no choice argh! I found my fuel consumption went down with it. Shell Extra all the way.

Nah - it's the British drivers you have to watch out for :headhurt:  Soon as they get off the ferry, many think they have to drive everywhere flat out, hogging the outside lane and that all sensible rules of the road don't apply to them... [:@] They need to remember that the 130 limit means KPH not MPH... :p

We use Norfolk Line Dover/Dunkirk (£50 return for Leon +2) and make a holiday of the trip, 350-400-ish miles a day; this time stayed in Dijon and Montpellier on way down to Vinaros where in-laws live (north of Valencia). Came back via a two-day stop-over in Carcassonne (lovely city) then up via Rouen and Abbeville, before cross-country to Dunkirk.

Only bit to be careful of for us is the A7 autoroute round Barcelona :drive2: This stretch is toll-free, lots of lanes and Spanish white-van-man takes NO prisoners... It's a great drive if you stick to mainly autoroutes.

Covered about 2,500 miles, averaged 48-ish mpg; get it into 6th and click cruise on at 80-ish - doddle.

We are off over there again in July for a week or three, but this time we are going to go down through the Auvergne and over the Millau bridge (good enough for Top Gear, good enough for me... [B)] ).

Fixed speed cameras are well signposted but are little grey things that are low down and hard to spot - and they don't operate on a tolerance system like the UK ones, so forget 10% lee-way. The Gendarmes use long-distance hidden traps as well - they've got you before you even see them on the horizon :( And of course you'll know not to mess with the Spanish police, especially the Guardia...

Although I've got Tom-Tom, I use mappy to plan the routes - gives you all the latest tolls and the latest position and limit of all the fixed speed cameras. :funk:

There's a large SEAT dealership near the in-laws and servicing is way cheaper than it is here too; might get it booked in next time I'm there...

I love driving on the continent - it's much better and more enjoyable than it is on our crowded, snarled up and dug-up roads! Go for it. :D

yeah i will deffinetly look into it, not sure of any age/driving experience restrictions yet, ferry from dover is about £120 for a 2week trip, from portsmouth its £450!
i was planning to cross the milau bridge too
so you recomend staying away from the big citys then?

That crossing price sounds expensive? Have you tried ferrysavers.co.uk? We book a Travelodge room online near Canterbury / Dover (£26/night) and then an early morning cheap ferry: 6:00am out / 16:00 return for £50 with Norfolk Line - and getting out of Dunkirk and onto the autoroute system is way simpler than the mayhem around Calais! Just go crosscountry from Dunkirk on the D600/D300 towards St Omer and then pick up the A26 - its all well sign posted.

As to avoiding cities, we only went via Paris once - and once was enough! We've travelled cross-country and via the autoroutes through France and Spain, but do tend to try to avoid the larger cities. Horses for courses really though.

BTW We tend to use the etap hotels, part of the Accor group - costs us £30 a night for B&B for two, ensuite shower & loo + air-con; all booked online before we go. You can also use the Formule 1 hotels, cheaper but they are a little too basic for an old git like me...

Have fun!
