Which one?

I’ve not had my MK2 long but she’s caused nothing but stress with the amount of issues she’s had and continues to have.

Long story short I’m thinking about a newer model, 2013 upwards and paying off over 4 to 5 years on hire purchase.

My question is, which engine....I do the miles for a diesel and like the torque. How do the newer petrol engines compare?

With driving a 1.9 TDI PD at the minute I’ve come to the conclusion that the 2.0 TDI CR will be the best all rounder...nippy and fun to drive on roads and a good motorway cruiser.

Seems the FR spec is the one to go for as there’s not much difference in price or insurance.

I personally have a Leon FR 2.0 Diesel 151 BHP and for the amount of miles I do, The MPG Is great! I generally get 70MPG on a 20 Mile trip to work. I had the 1.6 TDI SE Before this and that was even better, I got about 80MPG. They're great engines and great cars!

I have a 184 DSG FR and it’s great. Make sure you get a Tech Pack car as it gives you LED front Lights, LED DRL’s and Sat Nav. Drove the 150 bhp and that’s decent and punchy enough too

Get an early Cupra 265, there's not many in the UK but you should be able to get a good deal on them as most would want the 280.

I hear the 1.6 TDI is a bit sluggish and high revving. So much so that it drives more like a petrol?

My mates got a 1.6tdi

If you value having a strong rev range and you want to feel something when you plant your foot id avoid lol

I've got the 1.8 TSI and considering the performance on offer, I find the combined 40mpg to be acceptable. On a long run I normally get 45mpg, but as I live in Germany, I don't tend to go along at 70mph when it's legal to go faster! I'm sure in the UK my MPG would be near or above 50mpg on a good run.

It's a nice engine and it's very flexible and refined. Nicer than my mum's GTD for sure from a refinement point of view. The throttle map on the GTD makes it seem like it's the faster car initially, but you quickly realise it's giving you everything it's got quite early in the pedal travel. However, when you actually give the TSI motor a boot full, it flies.

I bought this car over a diesel because I found a well specced one at a good price, about 2k less than the 184 TDI cars (Leon / Golf / Octavia VRS) that I was looking at. It is for sure more expensive to fuel, but seeing as the purchase was lower, the overall cost was lower. And I don't have to worry about the incoming diesel bans!

Considered petrol due to the emissions but really like the torque from a diesel. I mainly do motorway driving and the diesel feels much better to drive than a petrol when cruising.

I loved my 1.9 PD130 Golf mk4. It served me well for many years and I was sad to see it go. My mum's GTD (with the 2.0 tdi) feels like it's got a flatter torque curve, and revs more readily than my Golf did. If I were in the market for a diesel Leon it's the one I'd go for, probably with DSG.

However, I would say that these modern turbo petrol engines also have a decent amount of torque (and therefore in gear pulling power) on offer.

Think I’ll have to test drive a petrol and a diesel. I feel a petrol will last better with age but then if doing 15k miles a year the diesel may be a better options.

I’m leaning towards diesel but would certainly be interested in test driving both.
