Which petrol does the Leon Cupra R like?

Hi people,

I'm picking up my Cupra R in a couple of days and I know for a fact that the dealer will not fill her up.....tight mongrels!!

Anyways I was wondering which juice this car likes. I’ve heard that you should always go for the high octane fuel, but what’s everyone’s take on that and different fuel companies i.e. shell, texaco, BP etc etc

Shell VPower - best for me. Quality consistently good.
Tesco 99 - good , but I've had quality probs.

Can't comment on the others.

But then, mine's not actually an LCR.......

If your wallet can cope with it, then your new car will quite happy munch on V-Power or High Octane BP Stuff.

However, it will run fine on any petrol - but you won't get the full performance out of it. This is the same for all the Leons I believe, certainly says this for my 1.8 20v.

Mine seems to run slightly better (smoother) on V-Power, but the nearest Shell garage is about 15 miles away from me (in the wrong direction)

I mostly use Tesco Super - not because I think it's 'the best', but because I shop at Tesco, so it's just convenient and a bit cheaper.

It seems okay, never had any problems with it... but it's nothing special. I've not noticed any difference between Tesco, Esso or Texaco Super - even though Tesco is supposed to be 99RON and the other two are only 97RON

Can't really comment on BP as the nearest (only?) garage that sells it is over 20 miles away (owned by Whitedove (Seat) in Cardiff) and it costs a fortune... and I'm rarely in the area anyway! I put £30 in once, just to see what it was like (more to see if it was worth paying an extra 10p a litre!) and well... no, I didn't think it was!

I mainly use V-Power with the odd BP Ultimate when not close to a Shell garage.
Never tried the Tesco 99 Ron due to it not being available around here.
TBH I'd stick with them 3 unless you really need to fill up and there is no other available then you can alway use regular unleaded. However I'd only get enough to get you to the next Shell/BP/Tesco's and fill up with the higher ron stuff again.

top chice IMO is shell V power.
BP i find round here to be more expensive than all the other makes and no better than other 97 ron fuels.

I try to avoid tesco 99, mainly due to experiences of mine and others that i know of. For example where i have run Vpower for a good few tanks and fill up with tesco the car runs poorly for a short period after filling up with tescos, (eratic idling and a not very smooth power delivery) which may indicate that the fuel isnt as good? - Whereas i have had no issue with any other make including 97 ron fuels. Im also sure the engine 'sounds' different on tescos.
Im also shocked how people i know have been treated by tesco when there has been fuel issues. (and im not refering to the big issue of last year).
Im not so kean on the use of ethanol to increase RON ratings myself.

Incidentally i have found on my LCR and some previous cars also that esso super is a nice fuel.

As said above, you can use premium unleaded although with a slight performance loss.

oh and incidentally i have found a shell garage about 2 miles out of my way thats works out the same as tescos super 2 miles up the road. (premium is cheaper at shell too).

sainsburys super has come out well in some recent tests too. and it only 2 pence per litre more above premium i believe.

Same here I normally run sainsbury normal unleaded and some time super.
I did try BP ultimat and the car ran like a bag of and it was about 8p a litre dearer than Sainsbury Super U/L

I drive a 180 Leon Cupra, and live not far from a Sainsbury supermarket....

I use their super-unleaded petrol, and think that it gives me great results (think it is 97 ron). There is a noticeable difference over the 'normal' 95 ron unleaded, giving a smoother drive, and what seems like more power and responsiveness.


(oh... and no - I'm not on comission for sainsbury's! But if anyone from Sainsbury's wants to give me some petrol vouchers, feel free to send them to me!!)

my car runs like a bag-o-shite on BP ultimate for some bizarre reason, but it isn't that bad at all on tesco 99. i did put some v-power in the other day and my LCR seems to like it........ but there isn't a shell really local to me

I only use V-Power, i'v also found my car does not seem to perform as well on BP Ultimate.

This has come up a few times before so do a search.

I have done a few tests, only using V power for a couple of months, then supermarket super and also standard. I did not really notice much difference between any of them.

I think a lot of people get mixed up in the whole 'V Power' thing and assume it is sooo much better, but I have not found that to be the case.

As for MPG, I found normal unleaded gives me more mpg than the others for some reason.

Again just my opinion though - I stick to standard unleaded - everyone says about how the others clean your engine better etc, but with the price of petrol nowadays I can't afford to run the car on silly v power and super prices anymore anyway.

If you have a mapped LCR though, which I don't, that is different and obviously higher octane I hear is the only way to go.
