will ebay cable work on 06 Altea

I have an 06 Altea which looks like it will have the newer com ports.
Does this mean an older cable and demo software off ebay will not work?
Is my only option to buy the official cable?

I have just got the Altea and have a few months of full warranty left. I thought I'd like to hook up vagcom just to ensure everything is 100% OK before the warrantly runs out. I assume there can be slight niggles visible in vag com that may not be apparant and show in any other way?

If I'm honest I had expected slightly higher economy and wondered if there could be something slightly amiss. Then again it has been cold recently. Would just put my mind at rest. I could also do with a few of the door lock options changing.
