Wolverhampton!
hi to you all....

Recently purchased myself an 57 reg ibiza tdi... Ideally for better fuel consumption.... however i was told i'd get around 45/50 mpg but im only getting 30/35! why is that??? Was told once it wears in it'll get better...

Any suggestions would be great - Thanks - James:)

Which diesel have you got?

How are you driving it, have you been used to diesel's before or is this your first?

I've got a Sport TDi (PD100 1.9) and I was getting approx 50mpg at first registration, but from about 5k miles onwards (currently on 23k) I can get 55mpg on most journeys, 60 to 65mpg on long motorway journeys at 70, and infrequently see below 50mpg, even when playing on country lanes!

When you say "driving it normally", how do you mean?

What are you revving to?
What sort of speeds are you doing, and on what types of roads you are driving?
How many miles have you done so far?

hmm

I now get around 55mpg out of my FR. It loosened up considerably after the first 20k, and my mpg also improved - was originally getting high 40s. Never seen anything in the 30s tho, even when driving like I stole it

There are tricks you will learn to driving a diesel more efficiently - use the torque as much as you can and change up earlier. On a motorway/A road you should be averaging 70mpg+ if you cruise at 60ish on the flat in top gear. Go to 70 and above and this starts to drop off sharply.

I have heard tales of people apparently getting a duff engine which burned more diesel than expected, but it could be your driving technique. Maybe you could go to a dealers and ask for a test drive...compare another TDI's against yours using your own driving style..

I've put about 700 miles on my TDi 100Sport, and average about 50-53mpg. I'm on my 2nd tank of fuel....its great :) But I have heard lots of times that mpg does improve as the engines gets ran in.

If you show the 'mpg' display on the dash, you can use it to drive more efficiently in any given situation.

Dont get too anal about that mpg display tho.....You gotta enjoy driving too :p

My FR-TDi averaged 50MPG over a week. When it was new it was not that good however. Break the engine in a bit (8-10K for it to loosen up a bit), and fuel economy increases - and it gets faster!

If you are putting your foot on the floor to accelerate that's all you will get. Driven gently and within the speed limits 100bhp will give into the 60mpgs, 130 can give into 50mpgs although mine mostly returns about 45mpg driven fairly steadily but past the speed limits and in the 30mpgs driven hard and fast

this is one of the reasons I went for the petrol as I do less than 5k miles a year in it and by the time it's 3 yrs old and being replaced it wil still be running in :(

might just take time for your engine to reach full potential. seems some tdi`s get great mpg straight away and some take a little running in. my old fabia vRS took till it had 3k on the clock before it would get anywhere near 50mpg no matter how i drove it. give it time and i`m sure you`ll get high mpg out of it.

My FR TDI gave about 40-45 for the first 5 or 6k then 45-50's up till about 12k. This was with the same driving style- mix of conservative and ragging it a bit, motorway and urban.

After 12k it was easy to get 50-55 mpg and rarely dropped below 45, however, after about 14k till now (15.5K) this has significantly dropped and i find it hard to get above 51/52 mpg.

Is there some sort of problem? It was serviced after 6 months at 9K for basic oil change. It is now 12months and 15.5K, could it need another service?
