do you think this could get mounted on the side of the battery tray, in between the battery and the intercooler hose that goes in to the inlet manifold?

It could but not if you run DV relocation kit
Let me see if Kris comes back with anything otherwise you may need a bespoke unit too

i dont run a dv relocation kit so should be ok, im sure a bracket could come from the crash bar area so it makes the can more stiffer. i take it the inside of the can has nothing in it? i swear ive read somewhere saying there are baffles or something inside? im well tempted to make my own can up at work.

There is a baffle plate inside but as i said port orientation could be problematic depending on how you mount it
