Windage Tray

Hi,

After taking my SUMP off which smashed i noticed the plastic tray inside the sump was cracked.

I took this out of fear of it shaterring and causing hell in my engine.

Now im all nervous because i dont have it in there anymore.

Anyone know where i can get a Metal 'Windage tray'?

Also - because my car isnt tracked or raced around - am i under any threat by not having the plastic on in there?

MK3 Cupras don't have any baffles or trays at all as standard to my knowledge... any pics?

Hi Robbie - no pics but i read on a vw forum that these sometimes fail and shatter

I dont see how a bit of plastic benfits the oil sump

And i cant find no metal ones so i guess im going bare lol!

Can you get a pic and upload it so we're all sure what we're talking about? Is it an OE (standard) sump?

Windage trays ensure there's plentiful oil in the sump for the pickup and primarily reduce drag on the crank by stopping excess oil getting splashed onto it - not something that's fitted to the MK3.

I binned mine after i removed it broken.

Ummm if you have a look on the vagcat.com website it is part 23 of the diagram for the ayp cylinder.

May otherwise be known as oil restrictor?

Its cheap plastic so i dont know what harm im doing running without it... Im not high specced/modified

yes they do have the plastic windage tray as std

get another and refit it.
it guides the oil back from the drain to the centre by the oil pickup up

I read on some VW forums that people threw theres out after stories of them failing and filling engines with plastic shards.

I have emailed the parts dept at my local stealers - dont suppose you know anywhere else i could get one do you? Google doesnt show much support when googling the part number from vagcat:

To be honest i think if its not broken - you dont realise its there - but it is supported by only one bolt (on the oil pump) and the rest is clamped when you place sump over it.

It has holes in the middle of it and a channel for oil as badger5 said.

To be honest though (AND IM NOT A MECHANIC, so this will explain my ignorance)

I dont see how it stops oil splashing around as it has enough holes for oil to do that anyway and as long as you have enough oil in your car the oil pickup should always be submersed in oil (unless you roll your car! which then this doesn't become your biggest issue !!)

Well after thinking long and hard about running without one, i have read many horror stories why you should have one.

Ordered from TPS for delivery tomorrow.

How many times have people removed there sumps in the past? Are the threads pretty stable (unless abused) ?

New Windage tray arrived!

Feels a lot more solid than my old one (but then i guess id be pretty worn after 10 years in a oil container!)

Will be fitting tonight and giving her a good drive tomorrow to/from work.
