Windscreen replacement - (non-insurance)

Anybody had a windscreen put in their leon, not under insurabce, ie private or cash job. Just wondering how much a screen normally is as mine is currently in many pieces!

Well i know i can get one for £180 so not too bad. Those prices sound like insurance prices, especially the 306 one, i can get 306 screens for around £90! Thanks for your help people.

i got one done for £140, did a great job and that was a mobile local fitter.

to be honest, given that most charge you £70 excess, and presuming if by not covering windscreens you save say £30 on the insurance unless you are very unlucky, your better off saving the £30 a year and paying out when needed!
(one screen every 3 years your better off without the cover and every 2 years much the same)

However, if you have a 'special' screen this may be different!

Depends andy, if you do a lot of motorway/high speed milage, then it's useful to have the free repairs you get with the insurance. I had 3 or 4 repairs done on the Golf Mk4 I had before my Leon, in 3 years. When I asked about repair costs on the Leon (due to Quinn not covering it) the RAC quoted me between 60 and 70 quid per repair, so I think it was probably worth me having the cover as I'd have ended up spending more than I saved. For the sake of 30 quid a year on insurance, I'd much rather have it and avoid any really nasty surprises tbh.

of course it depends on the car and use. Ive had 3 windscreens in 15 years, one car it was replaced out of my pocket as that was cheaper than the excess.
and the £30 was a guess so it depends on the actual cost.

I guess the fact is that insurance companies wont be doing it at a loss. So given that they usually pay out more for a windscreen that they can be got for there is some margin there.
But like you say, depends on circumstances and mileage!

Andy: whether they are doing it at a loss or profit WHEN they do it doesnt really mean much- its the fact that the majority of people pay for it, but only a small minority actually need to use it. Thats the whole philosophy of insurance, group your risks so that the premiums will outweigh your payments! if 100 people payed £30 a year for cover, and only 10 people claim at £300 a go, they have broken even overall. Thats how they make their money!

i know that, thats obvious.
I was trying to explain that if you find your insurance doesnt cover windscreens as standard as with gavin above, dont feel too bad as its not as good a deal as you would think

just make sure you cover it in a chip resistant covering for the race car.

I remember the SEAT Cupra Championship in 2004 at Brands hatch.

In between each session, most cars needed new screens

I had mine changed end of last year, it was £110 from Autoglass, insurance covered £50 I paid the rest
