^^^^ definitely worth trying the 42/39psi from your summer tyres.

Are your winter tyres brand new? If so you need to allow 50-100 miles to scrub in.

On the other hand I recall you saying you bought a pre-owned set.

I installed 18" AEZ Steam (https://www.tyreleader.ie/alloy-wheels-brands/aez/steam-3660/) winter alloys with Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 235/50 R18 101V XL.

The fitter set the pressures, I'm going to check them this week and set accordingly. Having just driven 1500km in snow, hardpack snow roads, ice, rain and tarmac, between -10c and +1c they are very good winter tyres.

I fitted the winters for this year a couple of weeks ago, on the last warm weekend (and washed and polished the car too - first time in 6 months!). I set the pressures at 39/36, 3 psi lower that the summers. It felt dreadful, with the braking being like having a long pedal! So thgis weekend (colder by 10 degrees) I chcecked and pressures were 37/34. I boosted them to 40/37, and it's quite an improvement. Handling and steering aren't as sharp as the 20's obviously, but much more acceptable and the braking is noticeably more positive.

I think that there used to be a bit of advice that said that add 0.1bar over the same summer version of that tyre. That is what I do with my cars and their winter tyres.
A lot of the time in winter most people tend to drive with a bit a restraint when compared with their way of driving when summer tyres are on a car, so never find themselves on the edge of the envelope for that size of tyre especially its summer version.
