The other day came across a brand newish cupra , 1000 miles on the clock, think it was 2017.
Was around 23k

I'm a bit reluctant to buy it
- as it was a demon tractor car, i guess it was hammer by wanna be test pilots, while in run in period, probably cold engine ... is there any chance that the engine is damaged?

for 23k seems like a no brainer ... but not sure

Personally no especially when you can get a basic model cupra brand new for £24k ish. Through drive the deal/ brokers4cars etc

I test drove a cupra 300 with 500miles on it at Milton Keynes seat and it was in a horrible condition alloys scuffed, dog hairs everywhere, the driver smoked so the interior stank and the paint work was marred to hell and back. As for the engine the sales advisor said give it some welly before the engine had even warmed up.

But... if you decide to sell within three years or within the warranty then I can’t see an issue.

I have a 290 ST that was ex demo. My thoughts are that it was a fair bit cheaper than new at the time and still has warranty should anything go wrong. It had 3500 miles when I took it. I don't see it being any different to a normal used car - you still don't know how it's been used.

Benefit of ex demo too is usually very high spec.

I agree. I would say at the right price and in as new condition yes. But definitely consider against broker price for new. Of course depends on how quick you need the car. Some long delays on factory orders but of course then you can custom build. As breadlybrown says often high spec on demos.

You can probably get a new car for same or less money through a broker if you are prepared to wait. That's the way I went with no regrets and 25% off list price!

If you are keeping it short term (2 or 3 years) then it would be ok even if it had been wellied early on. Problems will only show if keeping it long term.

Take it from someone who had bought demo cars in the past.

If it was a base model, you can safely go for it.
On a high performance variant? no way Jose. At least no if you plan to keep the car for more than a couple years, since everything that was worn and abused during it's time as a demo will bite you back in the buttocks the next day the warranty expires, maybe sooner than that, but even if the warranty is in effect it will mean that you'll be walking for a few days while thy (slowly) sort it out.

Better to save up a bit longer for the car you want or settle for a less optioned version and build it up down the road.

I think you could apply that train of thought for any used performance car. It could have been owned for 2 years by a complete idiot that ragged it everywhere and didn't spend a penny on upkeep.

Equally the demo could have been treated quite fairly. Unfortunately no one knows.

Without going into details I can also vouch that brand new cars with delivery mileage get abused...

Maybe is a cultural thing, but while here it's a 50/50 bet that an used performance car gets abused every time is taken to the road, with a demo car is something granted.

I have personally worked as a salesman for VW as part-time job, and have several friends working on dealers from other brands, and we all agree that 90-95% of the potential customers that want to ride the sport cars, will trash them as much as the sales guy in charge allows them.

Technicians are even worse than the buyers, at least here, hopefully you guys over the pond have better manners.

For instance, I, as an owner (and even when test driving) will drive like a frail old lady 90% of the time no matter what car is, and most of my friends do the same, while I also have some other friends that will go thru half a dozen clutches, engine mounts and set of tires during the ownership of a car.

I was offered a demo in the spec I wanted, but it was the journalists release car, and I knew how I had driven it at 500 km's.
I declined.

I'm not clued up on the options list for the 300 but at a guess bucket seats, Seat sound, Panoramic roof, keyless entry, Adaptive cruise...add onto that a couple of different packs I.e. winter pack, convenience pack and the like and I would expect the price to climb pretty quickly.

If none of those are of interest to OP then yes new is a no brainer but faced with a choice of 4/5k for options or a car with 1000 miles on the clock I'm not sure it's that much of a no brainer anymore.

There is a lot of ifs and buts in there, we dont know what options the demo car has or what options silles wants.
