My xcarlink died after a year. The iPod connection doesn't work just comes up 'CHANGER' on the screen so I have to use the 3.5mm cable instead. Means I can't change tracks with the HU anymore.

Mines done kind of the opposite, the Ipod still works, but for some reason the cd changer has stopped working, think it might just be a loose connection though.

No you dont need a CD changer for it to work, but one of the best things about the XCarLink vs it's competitors is that you can keep your CD changer and the iPod, where as most these systems would replace your CD changer if you had one fitted.
