If you want best mpg, try driving down some a roads for about 30 miles on with cruise control on as much as poss at dead on 60 mph. The car will be doing around 56-57 mph. This is generally where the car is tuned to for optimum fuel economy. Using cruise control makes a difference, its surprising how much your speed varies when using the pedals and it all uses fuel.

Was coming home from work in the early hours last night, decided to have a bit of fun.. I reset the mpg indicator, and at one stage my mpg indicator was almost at 20mpg!

For a diesel im finding the economy not too special, saying that there isn't even 2k miles on it yet, hopefully will get better.

I average about 35mpg combined urban and country driving.
 
I'm getting 44mpg.
I do 25 miles A roads per day.
Town or M way @ weekends.
It is coming upto first 10K service.

For the performance of engine I'm happy with economy.
 
Ok maybe some people are getting better mpg than others but to put it into perspective, what mpg would you expect to get from a petrol of the same performance?

After all if we were looking for economy we'd go for a 1.4 tdi wouldn't we?

Over 10k miles my mkV Golf GTI has averaged 34mpg with a mixture of driving styles and roads.

I chose this over an FR TDI as on the test drive the 170TDI did low 30's

Spirted driving over 4 tankfulls result 38mpg despite seeing 44mpg at one stage - not impressed, might as well get a 3.0tdi quattro!!(my old 130sport chipped 185bhp gave a nominal 41/42 with same sort of driving) its a great car but. ...............................
 
the DPF will have a negative effect on the readings as its restricting flow through the engine. Also no two people will ever get the same as hills, roundabouts, wind in open area's etc etc all have an effect. How you accelerate, brake, the load in the car.....i'll stop there
 
And as I now have my FR TDI 170 (At long last). I have driven it today from chippenham to heathrow return. I drove down the M4 at 70 using cruise as much as possible and it returned 47.2 mpg. I will be driving it from Newbury on the A4 on Friday, again using cruise as much as possible and I am expecting over 50 mpg.

Now comparing this to my Touran TDI 105 which is of similar weight etc and has same size wheels and tyres, & over the same roads, I get about the same mpg so I think its great especially for the performance you have on tap.

IMO its all down to how you drive, not the car.
 
The 16v engines are a bit more thirsty I think.

If I don't measure the first 10 minutes in the average MPG reading while the car warms up I get roughly 45 mpg driving like a normal human not a grandad (80 on motorways etc).

My partner can't get that so I more or less agree with you.
 
I've had 2 Mk 1 Tdi 150's, I've now got the FR Tdi 170, got to say the Mk 1 was much better on mpg. I do 60 miles a day, my driving style hasn't changed, in the MK 1 I could easily get 56mpg, mk 2 I'm struggling to get low 40's. Got to admit I'm missing the Mk1, build quality seemed better.
 
Used to get 41-46 out of my old mk1 150 fr only had my mk2 since Friday and have done 170 miles average of 38.6mpg will have to wait till it loosens up before I can make a true comparison.
 
If I drive at a reasonable pace on normal roads, im getting about 45mpg, its improving..

On the motorway if I hit cruise control at 70mph i can get roughly 50mpg.
 
These are fairly highly tuned engines, ( Vauxhall 2.2 petrol engine = 147bhp), the cars have got heavy. Its a performace car so anything around the mid 30s with town driving is fine by me. These cars are fun to drive and I do not agree we should drive in any other way but within the law, but I feel from some comments about fuel and tyres that 170bhp is not been used.
 
The beauty of these cars is the flexibility.

A high performance family car that one minute can see most things off (within reason) and then the next be more economical than a 1.3 petrol yaris.
