hi, thinking of having a tracker fitted, has anyone had this done, how much and does it reduce your insurance premium. cheers. Dan

Don't bother, you'll not likely save what it costs you and anyone with a motive will know where it is anyway & it'll be left by the side of the road where your car was :(

My LCR has a tracker and it didn't make any difference with any of the insurance companies I called. Unless the insurance company actually insist that it has one fitted don't bother.

Have a look in the Off Topic forum section here as there was a post recently about somebody who had their car stolen, but managed to get it back safe and sound because of the tracker fitted to it. The Police tracked and recovered it with no trouble at all.

So no, it might not make your insurance any cheaper, but it might be the difference between getting your car and it's contents back and not.

Good point RobM. I'm not sure I'd want the car back after it had been thrashed around but I'd miss the contents.

yeah ive heard a few times it doesnt bring your premium down, all it does do is up the chance of your car being found and therefore the insurance company doesnt have to fork out!!

Like someone said above, unless it's insisted by the insurance company i wouldnt bother either.

cheers guys, im not really interested wether they give me any discount on my insurance, i think it just for piece of mind that if my car was stolen, hopefully it would be returned safetly to me. My previous car was BMW coupe 325, and just before i sold it i had to do a plate transfer, i had to go to DVLA and found out that my car had been stolen and recovered, think this was due to tracer being fitted, so made me think thats all. I think ive seen it around for £400 mark or there abouts. Cant afford at moment, still skint after christmas, just insured my car this month, service due in one week, then 12 months tax two weeks after that. its never ending is it.

Unless you get the lifetime tracker membership you have to start paying a monthly fee for most of the trackers I've seen after the first 12 months.

I've never had an insurance reduction by having a tracker on a car, although some ins co's insist on trackers for some cars (and their locations).

The cheaper Tracker's rely on you informing police/tracker that the car's gone, the more expensive ones "know" when something's wrong.

Its also £109 a year for the subscription now (tracker) if you pay by year.

I have heard good stories, but personally I think it a) depends on the value of the car to you/monetary b) likelyhood of it going *without* the keys c) whether the police are interested in going after it.

I would however like to install a Tracker where I could personally trace it and monitor it.

biggest waste of money yet upgraded from 210 to 225 still with same insurer when renewal came premium went up and informed that if tracker fitted and not active/subscribed insurance invalid- so synopsis is insurance is the same or higher and you have to factor as well either anual fee or lifetime subcription to tracker so well p*ssed over whole affair

having just bought an 03(53) LCR 225, im guessing that it's probably got the tracker fitted, though the garage i bought it from couldnt confirm this plus i've got no supporting paperwork; is there anyway of ascertaining if i do have it fitted and how would i go about contacting tracker to (maybe) get it re-activated?

Anyone been in the same situation?

cheers guys

Had a tracker fitted in my LCR before picking it up and it's costing me £250 a year. The tracker company do not advertise it is fitted i.e. no stickers etc like you do with alarms. They also made it quite clear in the documentation to not leave any tracker related stuff in your vehicle or obviously advertise you have one to people you don't know/trust.

I'm also paying a 3 year gap policy on the car but decided to also have a tracker as I'd rather get the car back than have to make a claim. Admiral do take into account that you have a tracker or not but I'm not sure if this effects Elephant who I'm with at the moment even though they're a subsidiary of Admiral.

At the end of the day the car is a big investment for me and I felt it was necessary enough for me to have one fitted.

Just before Christmas, I was the victim of a violent attack during a house robbery to get the keys of our LCR. Shortly after the attack, tracker was activated and the police area car logged onto the signal and the driver was apprehended within 12 minutes. The police said that the tracker was of great assistance in catching the driver and subsequently there have been numerous arrests of these thugs and the case is going to Crown Court. In my opinion, these people probably wouldn't have been caught if tracker had not been fitted and we probably would not have seen the car again.

I support tracker not for the insurance reductions, which by the way we do not get, and not necessarily for the speedy return of the car, but the fact that they can have results such as mine and bring these twots to justice. That's my opinion anyway.

And a very valid one, maybe the goverment should subsidise them seen as it reduces the amount of time police have to spend on things, plus it makes their crime fighting statistics look better!

I'm glad the tracker came in very useful in that situation, it may have saved more people getting injured.

I must admit I only ever thought of my own financial situation, as I have a GAP policy and thus wouldn't really want my car back after its been stolen.

The woman on the phone at Elephant didn't seem to know what a tracker was, and only cared if the car had an immobiliser!

So you were told that if you had a tracker fitted and it wasn't activated that your insurance was invalid?

only the same as house insurance , if you inform them you have an alarm fitted to your house and you dont activate it and your robbed then chance's are they will not pay out , same as double glassed windows how many people lock them with the key and remove it , another get out clause for the insurance companys

i had to have a tracker fitted to my scooby other wise the insurnace company wouldnt cover me , cost me 400 quid to have it installed and 10 quid a month for as long as i had the car

Your car's less likely to be damaged if they grab the keys and you'll hopefully get the car back in the same condition before it was taken (saving you a claim) and also catch the thieves in the process as Cupracar experienced.

Yeah I got the same feeling from the guy I spoke to.

My car has had Smartnav fitted before I bought it, although it is an annual subscription so i havnt renewed it yet, (if i do at all). That has a tracker option along with the navigation stuff for an extra cost. - does seem pretty good if you are travelling round alot to different places. I spoke to insurance aswell and it didnt make a difference at all.
