No "turbo boost"

hi guys and girls

can anyone shed some light on this.

started the car this morning, ibiza 1.9tdi sport and there was a distinct lack of "turbo Boost"

got to my destination and started the car again and all the lights went off when turning over except the "engine Diagnosis" light..still no "turbo boost" when driving..the temperature or the car was fine..when driving i put my foot down..the revs were increasing..but no actual "oommph"...

anyone know what it may be? ive booked it into my local garage, they said they could only look at it next monday..

is it okay to dirve the care in this "state" till then, with out causing any damage?

thanks guys and girls..from a mechanically inept dude..:)

It sounds like it's gone into limp mode.

Would it go above 3000rpm ?

As for the cause - well it could be a multitude of things - you need to read fault codes off the ECU to find out, wonder if your local garage has the kit to do this.

If not, you have the following options:
1) Buy vag-com and read them yourself
2) Post in the vag-com forum on here, see if someone local will help you
3) Take it to a vag specialist or dealer who has the right kit.

Snap!
Just got back from a weeks hols in sunny (not) south Wales - 3/4 of way there, get stuck in stationary queues on A40 due to roadworks and tossers not following signs, engine diagnostics warning light comes on and goes into limp mode - no fun when you have a caravan on the back and the big hills on the A40!

Crawled to destination, went to SEAT dealers in Caldicott next day (very helpful) who plugged it into VAG com, checked under the bonnet, took it for a spin and gave me a list of possibilities (all for no charge ).

Said it would be ok to drive, but to get it sorted ASAP. Surprisingly, boost had come back... Maybe they reset something? But there was loads more turbo-lag = possible leak on pipework. Said they didn't envy me trying to get back to Notts with a caravan on the back... :(

They also said perhaps I didn't drive it hard enough... accused me of granny-ing it..? Missus pi$$ed herself at that. So spent rest of week giving it some welly around Abergavveny / Brecon :D No problems whatsoever. :)

On way back, fine until stopped off at mums off Jcn 25 M1 - going down slip road back onto M1 and limp mode arrives with warning light again... :banned:

So my symptons seem to be that limp mode comes on when hot and under load but after a short stop... Gonna go for a spin later, been sat on drive cooling down all night...

Ray - will be over your way (not far from Langley Mill are you?) sometime at the weekend, if you need me to read any codes off give me a shout.

it will go over 2500rpm, but with now progress being made so i didnt push it for fear of damaging something.

ive just called my local seat dealer, they wanted 70+vat for just a diagnosis via vag!

No way mate! Get someone off here to help...

My mate has a VW GOLF GTI... wasn't runnign well... I plugged VAGCOM in, did some logs, looked at some errors, suggested parts he may want to replace (MAF/DV) (Not applicable to your car but keep with me).. he sourced these for a total price of £80.... which I fitted for him for beer money!!

I rang VW and asked them to diagnostic run my car, I felt it was the MAF and DV causing the issue, they said they would diagnostic check it, and IF those parts were faulty, would supply and fit for an additional £130!! PLus the £60 Diagnostics!

Remember that will be a PLASTIC DV replacment aswell...

My point is try to get someone closer to you to check it out, someone that knows the 1.9 Engine and/or Vagcom... its SO much cheaper than dealers or even specialists...

I dont think limp mode can damage the cars, afterall its in LIMP for safety... its the cars way of looking after itself I think... lol

I dunno what the deal with the 1.9 engines are, but on the 1.8Ts if the MAF is fecked and reading 80gm/s its in limp, and a new MAF is required... do some digging, ;)

Best of luck

Could be heat soak, very hot weather latley, mine used to go into limp mode when it got hot, sorted with a FMIC tho.

Thanks for the offer, Lee, but have already booked it in to the stealers (ouch!).

Went to the dentist in it this pm, still limp mode and warning light; came out the dentist 30-odd mins later, warning light still there but all power back! Still lots of turbo lag though...
Heat soak sounds a definite possibility but then again, has never bothered the car in France in summer dragging 1000-odd kgs of caravan around in 35+C temps.

Well, the offer's still there if they don't figure it out straight away.
One advantage of vag-com over the dealer's computer is that you can log stuff live while the car is running, can be useful to diagnose boost issues or failing MAF sensors...

Ok so im guessing im the only one who thought "Knight Rider" when i saw this thread... Thought the poor guy had problems jumping his car :p

Otherwise i dont know if it could be heat soak or something like Sisson Said or perhaps a boost leak? Check for smoke and dodgy sounds!

hey,,this has triggered something in my awful man brain:p

before the problem arose, the last time i drove the car, it was through torrential rain on the motorway. and a roads, and i did go through some sizable puddles at speed...could ther be something in this?

let me know how you get on sooty..

btw when you drove to the post office and the light still on, was the car still in "limp mode"?:)

[:@]Aaaaaaaargghh!!! Gets in car this morning, warning light still on. Drives to Post Office, comes out, couple hundred yards up road warning light goes out. Car now running sweetly again... :headhurt:
At the stealers 8.30 tomorrow so will see what they have to say.
Must invest in vag-com...

No, not in limp mode. Was running ok(ish).

Well back from Premier at Leek who I usually use for service and stuff as I find them very good and reliable in my 4 yrs experience of using them.
Wrote a long detailed description for them first and made sure the mechanics understood what I was drivelling about. They plugged in the diagnostics and found that the codes pointed to the MAF  giving spurious readings... So two guys hopped in my car, one reading the diagnostic readout, the other wellying it around the Staffordshire hills. They then came back and swopped the MAF over and went out again.

They explained the sets of readings to show that the MAF was cream-crackered, so they fitted an exchange unit. Result: lots of dosh gone west, but car is now fine, no discernable turbo-lag and pulls sweetly.

However, there's no guarantee that the limp mode won't reappear if some other bogie is also lurking under the bonnet. Time will tell.

A couple of things that spring to mind:

1) Sounds like you got very good service from Premier, and

2) Lucky to have some fault codes pointing to the MAF - often they start playing up but don't log faults, which makes them harder to diagnose.

Anyway, sounds like it's all sorted.

How much was the new MAF ?
