DSG TSFi Mpg .....

what are you guys getting from the TFSi FR in general use, my golf 140 TD ( chipped 182bhp ) shows an average of 41mpg however working it out it seems it averaging 38/39 mpg. Yes this does include driving "briskly" with the heated seats on ac on and stuck in traffic, but our 1.7 Puma driving into just as hard less the heated seats averages 41mpg and thats working it out not using a trip computer - probably because its not that advance !!!

I'm looking at changing the Golf and think I want to go the auto route, the A3 is expensive, the Golf uncomfortable and the 170 FR isn't DSG ( but i'll still try it) I cannot wait until 09 when its available. I like the Megane 175 RenaultSport, the engine is much better than the VAG one, but - i'd always be concerned that it would fall to pieces.

Use the search button at the top of the page to look for "FR TFSI DSG Fuel Consumption", or just trawl back through the threads until you find it.
Mine is still running in and I am only doing relatively short journeys so I am getting between 25 and 30 mpg.
Once run in it is all down to how much you use your right foot.

As beachboy says there is another thread with ref to mpg. The general concensus its about 24-28 mpg.
If you are going to buy an auto then you will do no better than the combo of 2.0 ltr TFSI FR and the DSG box, its truly wonderful. I don't know if you can stretch to the full strength FR if you are looking at the 170 FR but it would be worth it. I cannot vouch for the Megane 175 engine but you will be hard pushed to better the VAG with DSG.
If you can try and take the FR TFSI DSG for a 24 hr test drive if they are still doing them.
Agree with you about the A3....I was the same but outrageous pricing even for a 2 year old one.

Jimbo is spot on. Had my TFSi DSG 10 weeks now (2500 miles on the clock from new). Great car

20 mile round trip to work each day (no motorways) 28.5mpg and climbing.

Did a 450 mile round trip at the weekend and averaged 32mpg

Best to date was a 120 mile return trip from the Track Day. 37mpg (And that was not granny driving!!) On all roads the traffic was moving at "national speed limits " but with no requirement/opportunity or need to "floor it.

What I have found is that you can maintain a good mpg if you can resist the urge to drive hard everywhere you go. Trouble is, with the TFSi DSG, the urge is sometimes a little to strong

How many miles have you got on the clocks now rpm? I've got just over 2k and I'm really struggling to get into the high 20's on a 17 mile commute in D! It does take me 45 minutes to do that journey though......

Best I ever achieved was a 35.5 driving from Birmingham to Devon with the cruise control set to 70

I average:

320 miles from a tank of Esso's 97 RON,
280 miles from a tank of Morrison's sludge...

This is a mixture of (very) spirited B-Road driving and a 12 mile commute, about 85% of which is 60mph...

97 RON is defo's worth the extra £5...

The Oilers will be along shortly to tell us how they get 40mpg and very nearly the same performance and how they just "lurve" the torque band...

Still, at least we don't smell or sound like a tractor...

Hmm I agree about the smell and noise, but I think you will find us derv drinkers spend more at the pumps now !!!

as for gear changing, us derv owners don't have to change down to accelerate

I think less than 30 is too low for me though, might have to be another derv for me then.

Sorry about the late reply Matthew but due to a family crisis I have been away from my computer for a week. However, as a result of the family crisis I have probably put on an additional 400 miles in the last week to take me just over 3k. The onboard computer now tells me I am averaging 31.2mpg from new This has gone up from 28.9mpg before this last week.


The 400 miles comprised of approximately 250 miles motorway and the rest town driving. Sat Nav indicates when my speedo is reading 75 I am actually doing 70 so I tend to set the cruise control at about 75. with the odd short spurt here and there

With no major delays on the motorway I found with both trips of 125 miles (95 on the motorway + 30 on good cross country roads) I averaged approximately 70mph from door to door As I said the remaining 150 miles during the week was made up of very slow town driving.

I know I will be making the same 250 mile round trip at least 4 times over the next couple of weeks and I will keep you updated

3k eh? Hmm I'm praying that mine improves, although the cold weather doesn't help much. My last car (admittedly a lowly 1.4 Fiesta) improved noticeably in feel and economy after 4.5k, so maybe I shouldn't be so impatient.

Must admit mate. With whats going on at the moment my head is up by .

I was thinking today that when I had my Leon 150 Cupra Tdi I was averaging about 45mpg on my 20 mile round trip to work and back during the summer months . But this did drop to 39/40mpg during the winter . For obvious reasons of course (extra lights, heaters etc).

I did mean to bring this up when I first logged on tonight but I see from the above you have already picked up on the "cold weather" factor (Smart ar )

how do you manage that??! i get a lot less than that, ive been keeping tabs on how many miles i get to a tank, the last 2 times (since i have been noting it) were 175 and 205 miles, WAY off what you seem to be getting.

when i fill the car up it doesnt even read 280 on the 'miles left' counter, i get 255. what do you get when you first fill up according to the computer?

I get around 290-300 miles out of my cupra with various driving conditions and using either v-power or 99 ron tesco special. If you are only getting 175 then I think there is something wrong or else you are flooring it all the time.

Car shows around 330 miles on fill up.

i blame it on a daily commute into sheffield, takes about 40 mins to drive 6 miles!! where i average 20MPG. i do floor it quite a bit (although probably as much as anyone else does on here)

i can only dream about getting 37MPG lke the guy above. the reason i have been keepin tabs on how many miles i get is cos im gonna go to super unleaded and want to be able to compare.

on another note whats the best way of transitioning between normal and super? should i wait for the tank to empty and just fil it with super or start mixing it slowly building up the mix of super + normal unleaded?

As the "Guy above" . 37mpg was only the once with absolutely no "floor it" moments . You may have noted from my recent responses to MatthewB that I am currently in the process of having to do several 200 mile+ round trips to the midlands. 4 Round trips to date with a "clean" run on each (i.e. no major hold ups) and I am now currently averaging 30.5mpg with 3628 miles on the clock from new. I always "fill to the top" when I refuel so I can actually calculate how many mpg I have done since the last fill up. The last 5 checks have confirmed an average of 30mpg. Must admit I have only ever put shell or Tesco super unleaded in the car since new.

I will be filling up tomorrow and I will let you know what the car "anticipates" I should be getting with a full tank.

What I do advise is "CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL REGULARLY". Did mine today and it is getting very low. Bought some Castrol Edge 5W-30 from Halfords and will top up tomorrow when the engine is cold. Did find the price of £14 for a litre a bit of a sting but it is the one (or at least one of the ones) best recommended .

yeh i got me some of that oil after seeing a number of people on here using it. and do check regulary. think i paid about £45 for 4 litre bottle.

i reckon ill be about normal, if i do longer 'clean' journeys i can get a much better average. im sure that the reason im using so much fuel is down to the nature of most of my driving (ie the commute.)

So im getting anything from 16-23 for short journeys and approx late 20s/30 for loong journeys
