Fluctuating Engine Temp

Can anyone help/advise me with this problem? The engine temp gauge fluctuates from 70 - 90, doesn't make any difference on warm or cold days, or if i set the cabin temp at 21 or 24, or if i'm in traffic or on a clear road, travelling slow or not so slow the needle moves up and down, one minute it's ok (90) next minute it's back to 70 .
I've read a thread on thermostat problems and temp sensor/sender but i'm unsure what is the most likely cause. Any ideas... anyone... please & thanks.

Yeah mine did exactly that, the gauge was going up and down randomnly just as you describe. All was fixed with a new temp sender. I'm not sure exactly which one as the garage fitted it, but it wasn't expensive.

car driving ok? does it do it all the time? i think its the sensor in the coolant tank. might need replacing but its worth cleaning the sensor prongs..

i dont think so. That sensor is to check the level. Not the temperature.

Id imagine its the thermostate/temp sensor, common fault the sensor, although obviously i cant be sure.

If it was going above 90 then perhaps water pump. But thankfully it doesnt appear to be that!

i thought it also controlled the gauge on the dash?

mine stayed at 90 when my engine temp sensor failed... and the car ran like a bag of nuts.

so the green or black sensor in the coolant pipe managers the gauge as well as ecu?

You need a new "green top" water temp sender, mine did the same and theres lots of threads on here about it already!

Yep - sounds like the problem I had recently.

Changed the black coolant temp sensor (G62?) for a green one. 30 min job to change it at the Seat dealers (15 mins of which was probably waiting for the engine to cool down so they could work on it!!), and £58 all-in.

well i am having the same problem, but I changed my coolant temp sensor, which I asume is the same as what we are talking about less that six months ago..... is this likely to be faulty allready ????

LOL! They took the piss, i fitted mine in under 5 minutes after a quick read on hear to find out where it was on the engine, it was simple. Just un-screw then drop the new bad boy in there! Oh and the part cost just shy of £20.00

I think when you go to the local stealers, they roll a couple of dice, add up the two numbers and then add a zero!!!
