Technically you are correct. In practice that is not the case. The traction control and ESP are tied in with one button. Traction control is on if ESP is on. Traction control is off if ESP is off.

If they had individual switches, I would have traction control disabled rather than ESP.

esp is merely a collective abbrevition of 3 systems;

traction contol, this reduces engine power.
abs, brakes wheels individually (in this instance).
electronic diff lock, brakes 1 front wheel while giving more driving force to the other.

agreed theres only one button, but were driving a car, not flying a british aerospace typhoon fighter.

im sure the other road users in Montrose would prefer you to drive safely and not have 'scary moments' but i dont think either are likely are they? :whistle:

That was my point mate. I know what it is, how it works etc etc, but the ESP being enabled cuts engine power in the event of wheelspin - traction control. I dont have so much of a problem with ESP out of town, but I dont like it being on in town because the traction control part of it is a nuisance.
 
well after being on one of the SEAT track days, the ESP is never being turned off :D Everyone here is different and have their own levels of 'safety'.

All i know is that I love my car and my life :D I may turn it off when i do a track day, but if i scare myself it will be turned straight back on. With the REVO on the car the difference is amazing.
 
No - I dont like wheelspin at all even out side town. However my foot is a better tool for eliminating wheelspin than an electronic assistant that applies brakes when I am trying to accelarate. I just dont like traction control in town, especially at busy roundabouts on greasy/wet days.

in an instance like that the edl would operate, and no matter how good your feet are you cant brake one wheel while applying more power to the other.

i dont think you would have the same issue in your current car.

As it happens, it was ESP on the last car too. The thing about electronics is that despite how advanced and fancy they may be, they are still dealing with physics. If you are accelarating and the wheels start to break traction, and the car starts to apply the brake, there is a moment where the brakes are going to have to compensate or over compensate accordingly. With no electronic control on, the wheels will overpower friction as much as the amount of power applied to them, therefore no drag or delay. To me at least, this is a better way of dealing with town driving especially on days that are not dry.

What I would be willing to try is a 0-60 and 0-100 in the wet both with ESP on and off. My bet is that the car will be faster with it off than with it on.

Edit: I am also willing to bet that every persons best 1/4 mile time in a Leon Cupra/FR/Cupra R etc were all done with traction control off regardless of it being wet or dry. My last car made 15 secs approx with traction control on and low 14's with it off.

i have always been told that a fwd car should be driven to power out of the corner, if i am going into the corner and the ESP decides it wants to brake for me then how am i supposed to pull myself oot og the corner... dont get me wrong i think the ESP can be useful but i DJHORACE instance i totally agree.

opinions are a great thing but do caus conflict at some point but hay you cant please everyone..

p.s. i dont go out intentionally to try and crash or try an hurt anyone... i will have you know i am a very save and curtious driver

if you can watch the top gear episode with james may and jackie stewart, JS tells him not to touch the accelerator until he knows he doesnt have to lift off (coming out of the corner)

pretty fascinating watching an OAP (albeit a true legend) fling a trevor round a track

There was a program on about 2 years ago were a car with esp had to travel at 50 mph down a wet track round cones and avoid a hazard,they tried it with esp turned off and the car just went straight on and hit the hazard,with esp on it steered round it easily without any fuss.Esp cant over come laws of physics,but it helps.
For those of you who doubt electronics just think of cars such as evos or skylines which use them to a great effect.If you could turn off all the electronics on an evo 9 i doubt it would be as quick with the Mr average driver behind the wheel.
 
A few things from the track day you might want to read up about.

Elk Test.
Steering under braking.
The full speed left or right hand turn with the ESP on and off.

Ask for opinions on the tests the seat track day attendees took and what it the elk test and the full speed turn was like with the ESP on and off.

The elk test in particular was an eye opener and is very likely to happen if you have some dozy driver / pedestrain pull out / brake in front of you.
