Cut short you said "I have to concede that the Cupra would have an advantage at higher speeds as there is less gear changes needed but 1st, 2nd and 3rd its pretty even".

You were referring to a "a standard DSG vs a standard Cupra"

This is what myself and others on here are disputing.

The DSG is very clever and it would be a good choice if you had to have an automatic. However my point about the superior spec of the Cupra was not irrelevant because the price of an FR TFSi DSG is very close to the price of a Cupra. For that substantial chunk of change you could have a nice car with a marvellous piece of engineering changing gears for you, or a more powerful nice car which is better equipped and can turn and stop better.

Yes thats correct I was referring to the performance of standard vs standard, being similar.

Yes your comments about the specs and prices of the cars are irrelevant, even if the DSG cost more than the Cupra beacuse the original question only asked about two specific items; rolling start and and from a dig, I answered that in favour of the mapped DSG with both standard cars being a close call (during lower speeds, 1st, 2nd and 3rd only).

If the orginal quesiton asked which one has better tuning potential, brakes etc the answer is obviosously the Cupra....but it wasn't. :p

We will have to disagree about the relevance of the prices of the FR DSG and Cupra when comparing the performance of the two cars. It is absolutely relevant.

I agree that a remapped FR will challenge and would possibly be marginally quicker than a standard cupra, but there is no way any standard FR TFSi, regardless of gearbox, is going to be as fast or faster than a standard Cupra unless the FR is stripped right out to save on weight.

On top of that the only objective figures I have are that when Autocar tested the FR manual it came out at 6.8 from 0-60 and the Cupra only matched its handbook figures of 6.4 0-60 (probably due to the difficulties of traction with the extra power) and the drivers who do those tests are professional drivers who do the test over a number of times and get an average. Therefore subtract a couple of the 0.2 secs gear changes and a perfect start and for the first three gears changes there can't be much difference.

My argument still considers some hard facts as above and remember I am only claiming similar (not better) performance up to a certain point where as I have already acknowledged the Cupra will ease ahead.

Yep. We are. Just remember that a remapped FR with DSG is gonna get smoked by an R1 :p

No, no, no the DSG will still be faster.....because if we drop it off a cliff at the same time as the R1, the DSG weighing more will reach terminal velocity quicker. :p

Yeah i do think the S3 should have " smoked " the A3 harder!

A STD S3 will beat a stage 1 A3 2.0lT

leon

It didnt got smoked harder because DSG is not available for the S3

Off topic!!: The factory says the stock S3 does 0-60 in 5,7sec, when all measured times are 6,0sec...

Would like to see that article... As here in the uk, Autocar magazine have tested both 0-100 with the Cupra managing a 15.3 and the Edition 30 dusting it off in 14.8.. So they have it the other way round... I would say they'd be pretty close...

DRIVE magazine has done a head-to-head comparison and at 0-160 km/h: Cupra=14.6sec vs GTI-ed30 (dsg)= 15.3sec. Similar figures in favor of Cupra were for 0-400m times, and needless to mention 0-1000m times (the Cupra smoked the ed 30)..:D
Very likely, DRIVE's testers were better in changing gears (for the Cupra) ...;)

Ah but you see the Leon will hit a terminal vertical velocity quickly, typically this is approx 120mph in freefall. The R1 would easily manage more than that, in 2nd gear ;)
