Good idea. See if you notice any difference when driving (perfomance wise) with the normal unleaded too.
OK then peeps, time for an experiment.
From new I have filled my car with "Super Unleaded" only and at 4,688 miles on the clock I have averaged 29.1 mpg (According to the on board computer)
For the next 2 months I will use normal unleaded only and post my mpg at weekly intervals.
Please note that for this experiment I will make a determined effort "NOT" to change the way I drive. i.e. I am not a "granny driver" but I am also not a "boy racer" I anticipate:
1. A "rural" 20 mile round trip to work each day (Monday to Friday).
2. An average of 100 mile rural/motorway "shopping" trips at the week-end.
3. Over 2 months maybe three 250 mile round trips
That said, I will fill up (brim!) with normal unleaded each Sunday and post costs, miles travelled etc. So you can all work it out for yourselves!
OK peeps. I normally run my car on "FULL" but I will now only fill up on Sunday 03 FEb 08 when I anticipate I will be almost out of fuel (i.e. out of Super Unleaded). Consequently, I will start the experiment from 2359hrs on 03 Feb 08. At this time I will post my current milage and the fact that I have filled (brimmed) up with "normal unleaded".
For anyone that may wonder what "Brimmed" means. I will fill up to the point where I can physically get no more fuel in the tank!
So, what does this all mean:
1. I am currently driving a TFSI DSG which is currently averaging 29.1mpg on Super Unleaded petrol from new.
2. From 2359hours on 03 Feb 08 I will drive the car on normal "unleaded petrol" for 2 months and post the mpg results on SCN at "approximate" weekly intervals.
3. Why? Because I can !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One shouldn't extrapolate from a single tankful. It needs to be measured over a number of fills to average out factors such as cold starts, greater or lesser use of air conditioning, short or long journeys, etc. Even filling up on a frosty morning can have an affect (fuel, like all matter, is denser when cold, and, as the pump dispenses by volume, one gets more fuel when it's cold). Plus as well, if one is aware of one's driving style, it can change it (the act of observing an experiment can change the outcome).
As an aside, I have filled up for the last three tankfuls with Sainsbury's Super Unleaded. I've noticed no improvement in power or acceleration, and the economy has gone from 26.3mpg over the previous three fills, to 26.1mpg on SuperUL; so no appreciable difference, apart from costing an extra £2.00 per tankful.
As "Hugo Nebula" said. It may take 2 or 3 tankfulls before we can say it is "better or worse". The overall mpg has not yet moved from 29.1mpg so we will see. I must admit also that my 200 mile round trip was probably a little more "spirited" than usual because of an "oil emulsification" problem which I asked advice about on another thread (please see "Do I Have a Problem???????") Having given the car a "good run" I think that problem is now "not a problem" If you know what I mean
It will be interesting to see the next couple of results with a week of "frosty" mornings forcast

Includes 100 mile motorway journey with the rest as short daily trips.
Did surprise me this because I had 4 trips to work in freezing weather where the car was struggling to achieve 27mpg. No frost this morning though and achieved smack on 30. I suppose it should also be taken into consideration that my 100 mile return trip from the midlands was mainly downhill
Performance wise I personally have not noticed any real difference (yet!)

I think I can tell from current readings it will not be good but we must remember that most of this week has been below freezing (-6 for me on Monday and Tuesday! morning)

A drop of over 4mpg compared to last week but we did have some "very" cold weather to contend with. The milage was also made up of short trips only. Did a 40 mile round trip this afternoon (after filling up) and the onboard computer returned 33mpg
The "over all" mpg has now dropped to 28.7, a drop of 0.4 since the experiment began.
We will see.

Is the performance any different?
Not anything that I have noticed (at the moment!). When I plant my foot to overtake the power still seems to be there. I suppose what I mean to say is that I have not yet found that I have had to flick in to "Sports Mode" when the git you are overtaking decides to try and make a meal of it
When I have had occasion to use "Sports Mode" I find the car reacts immediately and still "Red Lines" it in each gear. Same as before
To be honest my friend, I am not a person who would really notice any "minor" difference in performance (Jeez! I come from an era when the Triumph 2000 TC was considered fast (my first car
). However, that said, if I did note a drop in performance I think you could equate that to a "major" drop (If that makes sense ). No major difference noted to date RPM

consumption in the high 20's!
it's only being used for the school run most of the time (5 miles each way) and probably never get's warmed up but we're averaging 16mpg!.
