Custom Code are running a 30% discount if that helps makes your decision. They are also a sponsor of the site so you could always give them an email if you have any questions. The same goes for REVO Technic as well.

Been reading so many good things about CCodes smooth power all the way to the red line etc. I struggle at times in 2nd/3rd so I think this would be better than all the torque at once... Having never driven a more powerful car than my FR before : ( I can’t imagine it having anymore more...

I’m off on Wednesday, so going to pop into J. Gracie's to bombard them with all the usual questions... can’t wait to be sold on it though : ) Will pob speak with Drivers too, just cant decide CCode / Revo...

Whilst trying to let this thread lie (sorry folks), has anyone driven similar cars (ideally FR TDI : ) ) with both maps…? whats what please?

Custom Code: Is the discount still in force? So much cheaper than a Revo, which shouldn’t sway me I know…

Anyway, alx_chung thanks again for words of advice!

Ps: I think you may have passed me at the Roadhead Roundabout near the Hungry Monk in Lochwinnoch yesterday? If not, was the first ruby Leon with Aero kit ive seen… Well nice!

Erm nope not me.....I would be worried if it was :D
CC discount is on offer the time being, you can find out more Info here. I would phone CC first with your questions as they might be the best people to answer your questions.

Went to get the Custom Code remap today over at Total VAG in Leighton Buzzard near MK. Unfortunately, it turned out that the Custom Code guys were on holiday or something and their servers were down and Total VAG were unable to get any response from them :(( Shame, I was looking forward to the remap having spent ages investigating and finally deciding to go with Custom Code. I'll revisit tomorrow. Feels like Christmas Eve!

Oh, btw, interestingly, most the vendors quote 212 - 215bhp after remap with about 325 ft/lbs's of torque. One thing I noted about the Custom Code remap is that they quote slightly less bhp - 200-210, BUT, the torque is significantly higher than the others at 340-350 lb/ft :) So, at higher speeds and on a hill climb, you're gonna have an advantage :) To be honest, that's what I'm really after as I've found the TDi FR to be a real disappointment at higher speeds with no real oomph left after 60mph or so. Ok, yes, it does seriously pull in 4th, but plenty of other cars do too and I'm left wondering why they bothered to put the FR badge on the back.

Note to D...B...: the guy I spoke to today said he'd had Revo's as well as CC's and that he certainly believed the CC remap was better and he was getting the same feedback from his customers. And yes, CC are still doing the discount. £370 vs £600 or so for Revo.....why waste £230!!!

thats a pity about not getting your remap done cambobfr. Hope it goes well (or has went well) when CC are back in the office. Ill look forward to your post, post remap... Thanks for the feedback on the Revo / CC map options too i think (and your remap feedback will prob be the deal breaker now) that CC is the way forward... cheers

Ok, just got back from getting the FR remapped with Custom Code. Apparently the Custom Code guys hadn't seen my particular model of ECU (I think) before so it took some considerable extra time, but they did do it. Car is a lot more responsive now and drives a lot better with a LOT more pull! Most noticeable improvement is in 5th and getting away at junctions and roundabouts is a lot better with very minimal lag on the accelerator. However, on the way back, while putting my foot down quite considerably, I quickly became aware of a burning smell.... Just my luck. Very worrying. I'll get in touch with Total VAG tomorrow and see what they say. My guess is the DPF came close to catching fire.

Hmm, that £230 I saved, I think maybe I'll spend it on replacing the DPF with a Milltek downpipe!

oh no! first part sounds good, second part..., not heard any feedback like this before (maybe some early stories of 170's DPF getting a bit hot...) Hope its some easy fix for you bud. Interesting about the ECU not being known as well, im sure johnbev said he couldnt get a CCode map on his FR before? keep us updating on your motor, fingers crossed an all. cheers

Update:
Went out in the car last night, did about 120 miles taking it fairly easy, just pushing it occasionally, no problem.
Spoke to Greg at Total VAG who did the remap for me. First things first, I asked Greg what my position was in terms of getting my money back if I wanted and whether I had 7 days or 14. He said not to worry about that, and that he'd take the map off any time at no charge if I became too worried about the car.
With regard to the burning smell, he reckoned it could've been some soot or deposit which had built up in the EGR crossover pipe (? - I think I got that right) being burnt off and he thought it was unlikely to be the DPF. He also said that some customers have reported a burning smell with Revo maps as well so it's not the first time he'd heard of it happening.
What we both reckoned was to give the car a week or so, maybe a bit more, 10 days, on the new map, push it a bit harder each day and see how it goes.

I must say that the car now performs WAY better in the higher gears. WAY better! It now pulls in 5th like it used to pull in 4th. 4th is now incredible and overtaking on single carriageway is a breeze. And when you think it's pulling as hard as it can, put your foot down a little more and you get another level again! I have, as yet, to actually floor it.... I'm afraid to give to too much in 6th for fear of twisting metal somewhere in the engine/gearing. I don't know if that's warranted. The car has definitely got some serious torque now and you get a real 'kick in the back' when you put your foot down in higher gears. Much better!

The only other thing that worries me is that as far as I know, and as far as Total VAG know, Custom Code don't offer any kind of warranty on your engine with their remap. But then Superchips don't either.

any updates bud? Does the power increase really feel like you could damage the engine? Sounds quite extreme... Is the burning smell still present? Does your no worries about removing map feedback include cash back for the actual map as well? An expensive experiment...

Has anyone else got more longer term feedback on the 170s capability to handle the standard CC (or indeed Revo etc) remaps? I know this will sound very lame to the serious tuners out there but i really dont want to damage my car by simply undertaking a 'standard' remap... didnt think this was possible. I am uneducated in such areas so sorry for noddy questions...

hope the car is well cambobfr the good parts do sound very good!

No, no more burning smell, but as yet I haven't pushed it quite as hard as I did the other day or for as long. Sorry, I forgot to mention that the Total VAG guys said I'd get a full refund no problem. As for the power increase damaging the engine, it's definitely a worry to me, but I've no idea if I'm just being paranoid and that maybe the chances of that are actually pretty slim.
Yeah, comments from anyone one with longer term experience of a remapped 170 would be much appreciated. And if anyone here understands these things better....what sort of problems could I expect from overstressing the engine? Blown gasket? Throw a con-rod? Engine fire? DPF fire? Any info appreciated!

P-Torque - what are the bhp and torque figures for a remap from you guys? And how much is your remap? And do you think 340-350 ft/lbs is a little excessive considering that most maps just go to 325 ft/lbs?

Bob

Hi Bob

I have had customers report back with the following Dyno results (different Dyno's)

209bhp and 347lbs/ft torque
211bhp and 329 lbs/ft torque

Safe torque hikes are fine with this engine, as long as the mapping has been done correctly, there should be no DPF issues ;)

Scottish lads - who's the best our side of the boarder for mapping? Preferably up my neck of the woods in the north east.

Thanks for that P-Torque - so your remap gives up to 350 ft/lbs as well....cool :) I should be safe with my Custom Code remap then as those figures are pretty similar to the Custom Code ones.
I've given my car some stick today and still no repeat of the burning smell so I'm starting to have some faith in it now :)

Bob, any update on your power train? Ive been full on with work recently but will hopefully get the Custom Code a soon as i can. Would be good to hear all is well with yer motor.

On another note, would a stealership be best bet for spoiler side skirts? Anyone?

cheers

I have been running a CC phase 1 remap for about 5 months now with absolutely no problems. Ive never had the burning smell and never had any DPF issues.

Like Bob says, the performance in 4th and 5th is amazing, but you have to be very careful in 1st and 2nd (and 3rd in the wet) to avoid wheelspin. The remap really does transform the car.
