Been venting since new in dec.2003 now with 92K have still to find any adverse effects! Even when it hits temps like this about 10 days ago!!!

I was getting 57.9 but the A roads were too much to resist. ;)

And this one of when I filled up to come home (fuel was cheaper up there so couldn't resist. :D

417.9 miles on not even half a tank! :D (just)

I filled my car up the other day with £30 of diesel. Which ended up being about 27 litres I think. The needle was on 3/4 of a tank when I filled it up yesterday. I vented the tank (not fully - could've vented it more but was getting bored ) and I got another £30 in! :-o

The £30 before took it from 1/4 of a tank to 3/4 of tank. So basically by venting the tank I've got another half a tank in the space where 1/4 of a tank should be.

Last night I drove from Somerset (where I live) to North Lincs (Humber Bridge to be precise) on the vented tank. I did 80 mph pretty much all the way (apart from M1 roadworks and Birmingham average speed check zone where it was both 50 mph) and I AVERAGED 57.9mpg. I thought by venting the tank that I'd knackered the fuel gauge somehow cos it just was not moving!

Anyway - I got here and overall managed to average 57.6mpg (`A' roads and a few blasts knocked it down a bit).

But I managed to do the 250 mile journey on a needles width UNDER a full tank. So used about 30 litres of fuel? I'm guessing.

I took pictures on my phone last night and I will post pictures when I get back to Somerset. I just wanted to brag tbh cos I thought it was amazing how I managed to do the 250 mile treck with the needle moving literally 1-2mm. :D

Does anyone else want to challenge me and beat it? ;)

It can take a while to vent it fully, i normally fully vent it if there are no cars waiting at the pump behind me. I drove from Lincolnshire to Great Yarmouth and reached there having done 65mpg average. I was very impressed!

I'll give it a go - I'm off on a couple of thousand mile run around northern europe at the weekend and intend to vent the tank and see how I do when I get back . . .

Ragging it round the Nürburgring will probably not be very fuel efficient though !!

so is this a bad idea with petrol cars?

No, but it's more interesting on diesels as they're known to get good MPG.

Guys I my work yatter about it a lot ... I get this many miles to 50 quid etc.

I get 400 miles to my £40 and I'm happy with that... I don't drive like an old granny and I don't drive like Lewis Hamilton so it's all good. :)

Venting though and doing a long distance... I fill it right to the brim and sit at a consistant speed most of the way and get good mileage.

so is this a bad idea with petrol cars?

Not a bad idea as such, but the expansion tank is there for a reason and petrol *can* expand more than diesel. In weather like we've got at the moment, I wouldn't bother trying to max it out unless you are going to put some miles under your wheels straight away.
