I'd keep the Polo i miss my MK2 like mad. And GT's are becoming rare beasts these days in unmolested condition, if you've got time and wouldnt mind a small project i'd fix it up.

It may take a bit of fixing I think! Maybe I'll keep it off the road for a bit until I've got more time and then fix it up. I just can't find a bonnet hinge for it and I'm pretty certain it'd fail it's MOT with only one hinge

Shame all the MK2 Ibizas I've seen for sale locally are going rusty on the seams and arches as they would make a good temporary replacement.

I havn't read what anyone has said in this thread, but thought I'd just pop in and say.

The 2.0 8v is a joke of an engine in many ways

1) Its an 8v Petrol - who the fcuk drives an 8v petrol these days?

2) Whats the point in owning an N/A above 1800cc capacity unless its a "V" shape, a VTEC or something made by BMW?

3) Slow, thirsty and high road tax.

4) It single handedly made the GTI badge on the Golf a complete and utter joke.

Conclusion?

If you want a small engine with decent running costs buy the 1.4 TDI or petrol.

P.S.

The 2.0 8v is crap.

You basically came on this to start an argument.

I have an idea, read what the replies to a thread are before you think about being an a**e and start dissing other peoples cars.

I for one love the engine, even though the power is low, you still get a pull all the way through the rev range. If you see the replies to the thread you will see the miles people are getting to a tank, then you can decide if its thirsty or now

Personally I wouldnt buy a VAG N/A engine (R32 engine excluded)

The 2.0 is old.

The 1.4 is very prone to problems.

The 1.2's are underpowered.

VAG's reputation has been built on the PD engines and the 1.8T, why buy into a brand and get the worst engines in the range?

Makes no sense.

Yes that's your opinion, everyone has one.

But for you to come on this thread and say what you said is complete s**t in my eyes.

If someone was to come and say that your corsa is a joke, how would you feel?

Hmmm methinks you have no experience of VAG NA engines

2.0 is old and was stupid to put it in the mk4 golf, however in the ibiza its right at home, very reliable and great fun to drive. Tax in 2001+ models is high, but in mine its a nice £180 does 40mpg and costs me sod all to insure.

1.4 8v's are fine, underpowered maybe but great little work horses, 16v's can be troublesome. I've had 3 1.4 8v's and none of them have given me any major mechanical issues.

1.2's are slow and steady, but in an ibiza they come cheap with a nice amount of kit and if all your gonna use it for is a town car then its good enough. My mum got a brand spanking MK4 Ibiza 1.2 SX fully loaded and she loves it to pieces all for £6995. Plus when pushed it makes the best old skool porsche engine noise ever!

VAG's reputation was built on the beetle, then the MK1 and MK2 Golf/Polo's for their bullet proof engineering and involving drive. Yes of late the PD's are what stand out, but they can't of been all that great as they have now been dropped.

The 1.8T is very tunable, but as standard no better than the NA 2.0 16v and not as much fun to 'drive'. Its also riddled with daft little problems like coil packs, MAF sensors and such like.

What do you drive?

It didn't replace the 1.4. It was offered against the 1.9tdi 130 Sport until SEAT pulled their finger out and managed to squeeze the 1.8t in.

It definately did, I had a 1.4 at the time and questioned why they did it! It was a silly move, and they realised it later on.
