Why pretend you've got a Cupra?

I saw this lovely Cupra K1 the other day (or so i thought) as the owner was getting in to drive it.
Happened to mention seeing the car & liking the look of it, to my nearest local SEAT dealer about where I'd seen it & he swore he'd sold the car to a person of exact same rough description around a month ago from the same area but it had been an FR. I told him that I'd seen the C U P R A & K1 lettering on the back & he wondered if they'd not only ordered the K1 kit for the car (which they had done when ordering the FR) but also went and got the badge for themselves afterwards.

Curiosity got the better of me so when I saw it parked once again since then, so I went over & had a look & right enough it had FR seats, gear knob etc.
No doubt this isn't unheard of but just how common is it that people pretend they've got a different or more powerful car etc than they actually do?
God knows why they never just got the Cupra. Maybe they weren't allowed it as they were too young to be insured & this was as close as they could get. Still fairly pathetic though no?

I mean at what point do they stop pretending & how daft must they look? :fool:

i'd prefer to make it a lesser car, so wouldnt attract attention from theives or boy racers.

i personally dont see the problem, You want a car cause it looks nice, you cant aford the insurance etc so buy a lesser one and do it up.

Not everything is about power.

There's no problem as such it's up to the owner do do what they want with their car of course but going to that extent to kid people on it's a Cupra when it's not seems a bit much & daft, that's all!

But it's interesting to hear peoples opinions especially when they differ. That's why I asked the question so nice one.

i have a leon tdi 110, with a cupra bodykit and have a cupra badge to represent the kit, also when i get my front R bumper, i will be putting a small R badge on the front grill to resemble the cupra r kit, not cause i want to fool people into thinking its a R, as i already have a TDI badge on the back and under both side indicators, personal i dont think im pathetic, and i dont see a point to this thread, let people be happy what they want to do, seems you take more interest in other people cars than yours?

I take it you told that to his face

Everyone to there own i guess, we all do things to our cars and some more than others. I guess he wanted a K1 lookalike, simple. personally i have to agree with DanGB.

I agree with Dan too & yourself. By the way it was a girl! :D

Not everything is about power is right, but its stupid badgeing your car as if its something else like the fiesta Type R's you see and the 1.6 Focus 'RS's'.

yeah you're right it's because mines is old & you're spot on mate! Other peoples cars are infinitely more interesting at the moment but I just found being duped by accident a curiosity & wondered how much it went on.
Hence asking the question & the personal point to the thread for myself at least.

Thanks for your input all the same, didn't mean to cause anyone offense. I hoped their was some angle that might justify it if I only had known what it was etc.

& ok 'pathetic' is way too strong a word I take that back!

i didnt mean my reply in a harsh way ;) and ok, ill let you off the pathetic bit lol, i think putting a cupra r kit on your car is totally fine and then a small R badge on the front bumper to resemble the kit, you agree? some might not, but i think this is a silly bit when you have a 1.4 16v and put the exact same badges and badge it up as a cupra r, like having a 1.1 saxo and putting the vts kit on then the 16v badges and vts door stickers lol:lol:

its nice to do it up to make it look like something better. But at the end of the day it will always be the car thats stamped on the log-book IMO

If you are going to make a replica atleast do the whole lot (apart from engine if you cant) Ive seen a cupra r fake with the bodykit and wheels but still got the old interior and looks skanky makes me glad mines genuine lol

i dont have a problem with it within reason. ford fiesta 20vt`s is just silly, but copying a better model is flattery really.

ive gone the otherway , debadged and kept the older styled bumpers ..... but get tempted every now and again to put cupra r bumpers on. nothing to do with getting others to think its a LCR (im much quicker:D) just love the look

My mate did this with a Mk3 Fiesta 1.6S (with a few mods)... peeled the 1.6S badge off the back & replaced it with 1.1LX badge, fitted mud flaps & steel wheels... Funny watching the Nova SR boys faces at the lights :-o lol Hmm... those were the days... :)

I agree with all this up to a point, but when I see CUPRA on the back of a car I'd like to just know that it is one or what's the point even putting the cars model name on it at all if it means nothing? bumper styling etc because of looks and aesthetics is slightly different.

Alot of people will find there won't be a huge cost difference in insurance once you have added all the mods etc on. It's bit like people who drop a 20vt into a 1.4 because it'l be cheaper to insure

Modding cars is all down to the personal preference, I fail to see how it hurts anyone! That's just my opinion anyway, everyone mod cars in their own way, some people like to replicate other cars, because they look nice. Maybe he didnt want to leave it badgeless because he thought the back of his car looked naked, whatever the reason, who actually cares? what difference does it make... what worries me is all the time and effort you spent investigating this tbh...
