my mate tried testing my key on his seat ibiza mk3, as hes having problems using the button to open his doors. he put my key in his ignition, pressed and held the lock button, and tapped the open button 3 times..

apparently this is supposed to code the key to the car (what he said!)
well it didn't work, and now its lost the settings for my car. so i cant open my car remotely using the button!!

now i'm wondering if its a cheap job or not? i've looking around on here but cant find much info about it.. apart from taking it to SEAT and them having my eyes out!

Any help would be appreciated!

give this a try...

Key coding
1 ignition on to red lights on dash
2 turn off immediately and pull key out
3 hold 1 of the buttons down (dont matter which)
4 PRESS the other 3 times ( with a SLIGHT pause) 1 . 2 . 3
5 watch led on key (should flash) and doors usually try lock/unlock
6 turn ignition key back on to red lights and wait 5 sec
7 key out again and test operation

have to say that the idea of putting your key in his car was probably not a very good one.
We have a safety feature in our cars/keys that make contact and need to be the same, thus recognising each other, and allowing access to starting the car.

When you tried your key on your mates' car it obviously didn't do this.
I didn't know it would block the key all together then, but as it did I am pretty sure you need to reset the key, which is usually done as above.

didn't work :( anyone have any ideas why ? is this process designed for our cars?

On the mark 4 ibiza, the process to program the remote control is
1. Start the engine with a spare key
2. Open the windows
3. Lock the doors using the remote key
4. Press unlock on the Remote control
5. Wait 6 seconds
6. Press unlock again on the remote control
7. stop engine and take keys out of the ignition
8. Test...

I did this tonight on the mk4 and it worked, im not sure if its the same for the mk3 but just thought i'd throw up some advice, just in case :)

so the process should work? but i've probably buggered it by putting the key in someone elses car?

just to clarify

key in ignition
1 ignition on to red lights on dash
2 turn off immediately and pull key out
3 hold 1 of the buttons down (dont matter which)
4 PRESS the other 3 times ( with a SLIGHT pause) 1 . 2 . 3
then let go of all the buttons
5 watch led on key (should flash) and doors usually try lock/unlock
should it flash 5 times?
key back into ignition
6 turn ignition key back on to red lights and wait 5 sec
7 key out again and test operation

just so its all right in my head :)

worth a try :) cheers mate

the process for the mk3 is like said above.

1-key in the igntion turn on so the lights come on but dont start it.
2-Take the key out quickly
3-quickly- hold down the lock button on your key fob and press unlock 3 times
4-the led on the fob will light up 5 times during them lighting up the car should try and lock and unlock itself.

make sure you have all your doors closed and your sat in the car, try and do the process quickly.

good for you mate.
glad you got it sorted.

In the future when a mate asks you for your key what do you say then... ;) lol

Just to confirm i also had the problem of my remote fob not unlocking or locking on my mk3 Tdi. I changed the battery and nothing happened. So, i followed the first guide and on the third attempt it worked! Awesome! Thanks guys!
