cam belt

i drive a 2001 cupra T. just wondering at what mileage the cam belt should be done and has anyone had one go. If so at what mileage. any help would be greatly appreciated.

mines 8 years old and has done 80000. I bought it at 70000 miles. it has a full service history but in the service book it doesnt say that its been changed.

£275 is pretty cheap. Its about 2.5-3.5 hours worth of Labour. I would suspect that the figure you have been quoted does not include a new waterpump or hydraulic tensioner damper (different from tensioner). You should really be replacing these also. £400 is not an unreasonable figure for a respected garage to charge for the job to be done properly.

If you're not replacing water pump and it fails (which is common on the 1.8T) it'll cost you the same again to repair that as the cambelt has to come off to replace the water pump. Bite the bullet and get it done properly. Pay one bill instead of a possible two.

Had mine done, around 80k. Advised that the you only change the water pump if it starts to fail.
DON'T RISK IT! Had a water pump fail on my Calibra Ecotec......£1500 to fix it.
Water pumps are around £45 - 60, for the little extra you have piece of mind. Plus it makes sense, that if the cambelt is off, to change the water pump as there rum off the same belt.
Make sure you tensioners and pulleys are changed too.

Where are you located? It'll be much cheaper to go to a specialist than it will be to have it done by a dealer. The various forum sponsor specialists will do a better job and charge you less than the dealer.

Had mine done at MidlandVW a couple of weeks ago - £260 for parts, labour & VAT.
This included the cam belt, tensioning roller, relay roller, water pump (with metal impellor) and coolant replacement.

Send them an email & they'll sort you out, speak to a chap called Jody, knows his stuff!

Fixed price servicing is pretty good there too, I'll be taking mine there for all maintenance work.
They're based in Cannock.

Good luck mate, the feeling of peace of mind once it's done is more than worth what it costs!

just had a right result. spoke to my brother who works for ford in colchester.
going to get parts and labour for £120. dont know why i didnt ask him in the first place.
