Shorten a dip stic? Wont me very good at telling you oil level then will it? ;)

You could but a tad off the end i spose, so i may be making my self look like a tit!

You can't shorten the dipstick - lol! I'll have to take the sump off again and enlarge the hole where the dipstick passes through the top plate of the baffle, it's obviously too small and/or not in the right place. You can see the hole on the left side of the plate in this pic:

Looks way too small to me. I'm going to take a 25mm holesaw to it.
 
Yes, one of the worst designs I've ever seen on an engine, the engine mount sitting inbetween the timing belt is just plain stupid! :thumbd: Tomorrow I should have the timing belt finished though.

same stupid design on the MK.4 Ibiza......crazy the amount of stuff i had to remove to replace the timing belt on mine; vacuum servo because it attached to the expansion bottle which is in the way of one of the timing belt cover screws :confused:[:@]:wtf:


The INA oil pan is also a source of much annoyance - first I had to trim one edge to get it to fit, then I had to modify the oil return line to get that to fit, NOW the dipstick won't go in, so I'll have to take it back off again to modify it to get that to fit - what a PITA! [:@]

At least the BDM sump went straight on with no hassles at all.

what a pain in the ass, surely for the coin you've laid out for the thing it should be a direct fit straight out of the box :shrug: having to cut bits off or drill holes should have been rectified in the design stage of it :shrug:
 
Rob, forget marks on belt, they do move. I always use the flywheel mark you can see through the rubber gearbox plug. Provided the cam and flywheel mark line up, do two revolutions of the engine by hand and check marks again. If they line up again, your good to go. Make sure there's no slack in lead edge of belt. Leave the bottom half of the engine mount in place. Just undo the 3 bolts and leave them in the housing so you can slide it about and work around it. If it was me, i wouldn't re use the tensioner once the pin has been pulled. Compressing it again only weakens it and they are crap enough th start with.

Get yourself a cone drill bit, you can have that hole enlarged in 2 minutes whilst keeping it central.
 
Yes indeed, should be a straight fit. It's well made - the welds, baffles etc., but poorly designed, I would have thought they would have modelled it around the OEM pattern.

I'm very tempted to put the BDM one back on! I couldn't even sell the INA one due to the dipstick not even going into it.

Is this not returnable now as its not fit for purpose? I know you can but surely all this work is not up to you to do. Fit the Backdraft one get your money back for this one??
 
Don't know guys, I've come this far with it, I'll take it off tomorrow and enlarge the hole, I'll put something on the tip of the dipstick to mark where it hits, we'll see how far out it is!

Good day today though - timing belt is done, alternator back on and new accessory belt is on, SEM manifold is back on, as are the injectors and fuel rail, coolant header tank is back on, spark plugs are in.

Not much to do now! :D

It'd be nice of you to feed back to INA how much you have to "adjust" the hole, it'd save everyone else grief.

I know about the clearance issue with the accessory bracket but now the dipstick?
