Lowering springs

You seem to know your stuff. Where do you get your info from?

I read on another forum about a bloke with the eibach's (25mm) and he said there was very little clearance at the front.

If your info ic correct I would rather save up and get some proper coilovers.
thats me! i picked up my Cupra 29/Oct and the dealer had already fitted Eibach springs for me. i knew this was a tempory fit, the factory ride height was so high it was embarrassing, i couldn't drive away looking like an off-road fan. i was going to fit coilovers as soon as i could get them, and now they have arrived, so i have to freeze my ***** off fitting them.( a day after i got the car the factory exaust went in the bin!)

So would you really recommend staying away from just springs on their own? Did the car still look pretty high even though the clearance was poor?

Yes there are vid’s of the custom exhaust; you’ve taken the rear seats out as well haven’t you?

Really not sure what to do about the suspension, but I can’t leave it standard, it look so poo! I can’t afford over 1k ether. £600 would be just about ok..

i guess wait for an affordable coilover set to be available, lowering springs work at the front, but at the back the long dampers mean short springs or cut down springs are too dangerous as they could fall out, so we need someone clever to find out if there is a VAG rear damper that would fit that would give a shorter travel and retain a short spring. i'm going for a 2 seat lightweight trackday theme; hope to be ready April 2010. currently working on an air filter conversion, went to the engineering shop with drawings this morning - it uses a Green cotton cone filter in a modified factory air box:)

as I understand if we change the springs with shorter ones, the rear may "drive away"? So, that may cause a "spin" ?  btw, got a 1.4 non-turbo ibiza :)

For that much you can pick up a set of KW variant 1 coilovers.

Would you go for these of the eibach pro street coilovers?

Personally would go for the Eibach Pro Street as the Variant 1 KWs are their lowest entry level model and there is only around £300 difference. I know it may sound like a lot to some, but when you take into consideration that you will probably end up upgrading and paying for both sets if you start with the KW then there is a lot of saving.

I was going to go to Awesome to get the Eibach's fitted as they stock them there. Just waiting for a reply from a PM I sent.

I just received a set of 35mm lowering springs from KW there and after having a good read at this thread I thought it would be wise to call KW direct and ask them for any information they have on the matter as I don't want to even open the box if there is a safety issue.

I phoned the KW Automotive UK number and got through to a gentleman who spoke perfect English but spoke with a heavy German accent so I can only presume he has been sent over from KW in Germany and has a reasonable knowledge on the product/suspension (Big assumption I know)

Anyway he said that the possibility of the springs coming loose from the rear is completely untrue and went on to say that the OEM dampers are perfectly fine with KW'S springs up to about 40mm,any lower and there is a need for coilovers and went on to say that there would be absolutely no problem of any kind having the 35mm ones fitted to my car

With such assurance over a recorded phonecall where I even got the guys name, I'm feeling mighty tempted to go ahead and have them fitted.

However ibizaracebrake you sound incredibly knowledgeable on the matter and I wouldn't like to come a cropper especially after you have warned about this, further to the point is the fact Iam by no means savy on vehicle mechanics

what to do what to do...

my point is; if, after fitting lowering springs, the back still looks too high (which is what happened to me), you can't just cut a coil off each rear spring to get the height right - i tried that with the spare standard springs i had and they were too loose. only coilovers with adjustable rear platforms and shorter dampers will level the car front to rear. the problem was worse on mine without the weight of the rear seats in the back!

No wonder the springs were loose if you were just cutting coils out of them.

H&R do a 40mm rear and 25mm front kit for this reason but after seeing a few sets of the KW's fitted the car does seem to sit level.

am i being thick? the car looks level to me on standard springs, so why, if you shortened both springs by the same amount would the car suddenly not be level anymore?

Im going for the eibach coilovers. The springs are progressive and the dampeners are by KW and are of the same quality as the Variant 1's but set to eibach's dampening specifications. They should give a good ride and better handling than standard. With them being adjustable i'm sure i'll get a nice looking ride height.

Sounds good Mardon, good thing that the dampening settings are different on the eibachs because there is a guy round the corner with V1's on his S3 and he says the factory preset dampening is rock hard on his

I just need to get my springs fitted now the alloys and all the dark grey/matt black plastic is painted gloss black,I'm just waiting on picking my car back up from the detailer whose putting on the gloss black roof wrap from the sunroof back

Cant wait to see this craigboca!! Gonna look epic!

From what I have read the eibach's are softer than the k1's. The progressively wound springs should give a nice ride too.

Hope that some polly bush’s are made before I get mine fitted as i’ll get this done at the same time. Finally top the handling off with a Whiteline ARB if they do one to fit. I think all this combined with the new XDS should give some real nice turn in.

Just a quick note for anyone who is going to fit coilovers.

Make sure that once you get the height you want, go to a garage with scales to finish them off or you will be wasting a lot of money from loosing out on handling from inpropper (is that a word?) installation. There is no way you can set up coilovers properly by eye.
