I've had this "knocking noise for a year now and whatever I do it wont go.
It comes from the front off-side and only does it when turning left into say a side street or onto my drive etc if there are any small bumps in the road or cerbing etc. It never does it if its smooth, when driving straight or turning right! When it does do it, it knocks a few times like somethings moving side to side under cornering forces.
This started last year!
1st thing I changed were the wishbone bushes for powerflex (didnt sort it) :shrug:
It then had a service where I was advised the ARB+bushes needed replacing so I did. (noise still there) :confused:
I've also recently replaced the top mount bushes and that didnt fix it!!![:@]
Thoughout last year, 3 garages have had the car to try and source the knocking including the great chaps at Awesome GTi and nothing has been found!
I'm stuck now, really thinking about getting shut as its driving me crazy :cry:
I dont know what to do anymore if somewhere like Awesome couldn't find anything I'm not sure anyone can!!
Has anyone heard of something like this or experienced it themselves? :help:

I think i have the same problem, normally when turning quiet hard into a side roan etc and sometimes in reverse when turning.

My car is in the garage having some bits replaced, if it fixes it i will tell you what i changed.

Sounds like it must be the drop links or cv joint then!:D

I have just changed everything and it has stopped - but the knock was still there when I had done wishbone bushes, bottom ball joint and arb bushes!

Therefore it must have been the drop links or the top mounts - still got the track rod ends to fit!:cry:
 
Guys, there are several posts on here about this.
I have started and finished a few with what solved mine.
I always try to keep up with these posts and give them an answer.
So basically change you ball joints and the problem should be solved:)
 
Had the same problem when turning right turned out to be the nearside cv joint, check the boot ain't split or any grease. Seat wanted £240 for new joint but see dave from seremotors on here he sorted me out an prob worth doing the ball joint at the same time
 
Not sure about the cv joints as it only really does it on parcial lock if the road is rough. I can turn full lock in a smooth carpark and all's quiet and nice.
What do people think about the Ball joints? I've not changed them yet but I would've thought it'd be an easy spot for a skilled mechanic.
Far short of changing the suspension and chance wasting more money, I'm becoming stuck for options.
Had another thought, the cars just done 50k. Could an engine mount cause this?

An engine mount would have to be totally knackered to give you a metal knocking noise.
You would feel the whole car vibrate on tick over before it got to a knocking.

My car passed an MOT before I got a chance to change out my ball joint, so yes, a skill MOT tester would not feel the play and this can still need changing.

Sounds promising matey. Its in a garage next week I'll get em changed, are they uprated versions out there or would you go standard? Could you remember the cost?

To eliminate the link rod just take it off, it's only two nuts but only drive slowly and don't go to far just go and do what you do to create the noise then put it back on then if it's not this likely to be a ball joint or CV
 
Did you sort it after I did my cv joint an the knocking stopped untill I hit about 50-60 then a get a knocking an vibration through the steerin wheel any suggestions
 
Ive got this knock. It started happening after I had the car lowered and on Eibach anti roll bars. I have asked a couple of people and they do not know what it is and they have said to change the cheapest part first and work your way up until the knock disappears which I am not convinced about.

Isnt it a bit weird that a few people have this and only when turning? Although mine has been going on for a bit now and it just feels like something is loose and the tracking is out even though a garage laser aligned the wheels.
