two codes - p1553 and p1504

hi guys, my friend has a mk 4 ibiza and is plagued with a issue of non starting and the dreaded engine light on the dash. It is very intermittant and sometimes the car will start with the light on other times it juts wont fire up at all, but then will after several goes.
Her normal mechanic got some testing gear and came up with two codes P1553 and P1504. He had a 'play' around under the bonnet but it is still happening. Now he suggested taking it to a dealer, but havinga leon cupra and beinga member here i know that dealer normally = dealer!!!! So though i would seek the wisdom here first.
Anyone have any ideas? Seen lots of mentions on line but not for the ibiza and not so sure it's the same issue with different cars.

P1504 - Intake Air System Bypass Leak Detected

Sounds like it needs to be taken to a VAG garage

Is the car really hesitant to start up? And when you do get it going, does it stay in limp mode??

It's a friends car so as far as I know it simply won't fire up at all. I will speak to them to get the exact details. Once it starts it's fine and drives ok.
