Hi guys, need some advice for yet another problem! My car is making a weird noise in 1st and faintly in second. It is only when you are in gear and accelerating at low speeds (possibly cant be heard at higher speed/revs because of engine noise). It sounds like the noise you get when you are reversing but quiter than that. I did a quick search on google and something to do with gearbox bearings is coming up? It is starting to worry me slightly because the last thing i need is to replace the gearbox! Any help would be appreciated guys!

I know 2000 reg polo & lupo had bad gearboxes on the 1.4, wayyy to much torque for them and so when you enjoy putting your foot down it trashes the gearbox alot quicker than most cars :(

not heard about the same problem on ibiza though, as VW striked a deal with alfa gearboxes, not sure when tho

if it is bearings get it fixed before it breaks, as it is only £300... yeah only compared to a new gearbox lol :D

would you say like a fly was stuck in the gear gaitor ?

my 1.4 100bhp lupo had that when you pushed it over 4k rpm

Can you record a video so we can hear the sound?

Tbh it is'nt that loud that it could be heard through a video. I just know that it is different because i have been driving the car for nearly a year and this does'nt sound right

No i would not say it sounds like that and it seems to be only making it at low revs. It seems to be coming from the front end of the car, not sure wether under the bonnet but certainly up the front of the car

worth checking the wheel bearings i'd say

how do i check these then? really want to get this sorted quick because i cant be doing without a car cos i need it to commute to work which is a 50 mile odd trip 5 days a week

I get the same sound in 1st gear but it goes after that. Sounds like a dog box but goes when you change gear in to 2nd.

Don't think it's a problem at all as my old focus used to have the same sound a bit.

I also find it hard to believe that your car - relatively new - can be having gearbox issues, as far as the video thing is concerned you could try just putting the camera on the floor in the passanger footwell and see if it picks anything up.
Is it similar to the noise that you get from reverse gear?

what makes it difficult to believe? all cars including those that are high priced get problems from time to time no matter what age they are. As mentioned before, the noise sound like the noise you get when you are reversing but is quiter than that. I dont have a proper camera to record the sound, only a phone and tbh even if i did i very much doubt whether it would pick it up because of road noise

Mine does this with the air con on. Makes a weird whining noise. Clearly mine isn't gearbox related.

update! just been to dealer and the gearbox needs to be taken out and stripped down cos the mechanic recons its something to do with the bearings. Gutted as the car will be away for 3 days and i cant get a coutesy car cos im not over 21. Just hope it feels the same when i get it back :(
