hey all, merry xmas need a cupra guru! thinking of buying a cupra cheap non-runner! owner said he was driving and he heard a bang an the car cut out. on further inspection the engine is leaning forward so he suspects its an engine mount but doesnt know? hasnt looked or playing dumb?? and said maybe some plugs or pipes had pulled away? the car starts then cuts out!

sounds plausable right, i dont know my way around a 20v? im thinking induction pipes have pulled off?

could the engine mount snap or come undone enough to let the engine drop that far??

car is y plate 138000 completely standard accept for being lowered, mot june, no tax, £1000 sound like a good deal?

your thoughts?:help:

i saw this was gonna buy for spares but decided against it, question is why sell it for so cheap instead of just re attaching what "un plugged" and get a mount for £30 and sell the car running.............. ask yourself.

I would consider the worst and say the cambelt has gone pop and it's just not worth fixing, or perhaps oil starvation on the turbo has broke that. A broken engine mount wouldn't stop the engine running, it might stop the car moving though.

Get someone to go with you to view with vag com and plug her in
Any decent seller won't mind you doing this unless they have something to hide !
You say it starts does it give out any strange smells ? Eggy? Lumpy idle?

lol... well going car hunting friday, think i may have found a better deal! a golf gti mk4 turbo, also with a prob though, its the same car as a mk3 right??

owner says gearbox has gone and the starter is jammed? his garage told him when the gearbox goes it causes something to drop an jam the starter, thats the owners words... surely thats a sign of clutch? unless the box went which put so much force on the clutch it blew??? the fella obviously promises the car will run spot on with a new gearbox? again thanks for any opinions ppl?

The gearbox has rivets that are known to become free and in turn smash the innards of the gearbox to pieces so it prob means a new box ! Happened to mate with a Leon ( same floorplan)

Ok, so does the starter turn the flywheel directly or from inside the box elswhere?
he reckons the clutch is good so must be disengaged right, although it wont start?

Tell me if im wrong but on most cars the starter turns on the teeth on the outer edge of the flywheel right, the car freewheels he said so the clutch is disengaged so why dont it start, unless the starter is mounted else where? or im talkin crap an missed summit lol?

Your right on the starter issue it picks up on the flywheel
Depends what you mean it won't start does it try or is it completely dead? Immobiliser prob? I take it you haven't heard it running so in theory you are buying blind! Never good really

well he said his mechanic told him "when the gearbox goes something drops and blocks the starter"?

i spoke to the owner (who seems young an unknowlegable), he said the mechanic took the box out cause the he was getting a box to fix it, he lost his job and needs to sell it for a cheap car as he as just got his first house an cant afford to fix it now!(deep breath lol).

Now the mechanic has put the broken box back in because someone was coming to view it (why he would want it back in baffles me?? strange!)! either way im getting the mechanics number to talk to him direct!

The car has a revo remap to 215bhp, 1999, 115000, 18s, lowered, recaros, dvd player, 3door, gearbox suspect gone £900! i can fit a box average 2 hours for a new job can ebay one for £100 an its longtax an tested and clean, oh and newish turbo good runner...

he said the box jus died while putting it in reverse to paralell park?

sounds too good to be true...?
maybe his mechanic is after it?

Why put in a f***ed box ? If he removed the box you would remove the offending part also so it would start! Sounds abit fishy

to good to be true? doesnt sound like it to me. to be honest if you got the money to be throwing at it trying to get it fixed you might as well buy a decent one to start with, not knowing the full story or being there myself i wouldnt know but does sound a little suspect.
just my opinion

also will all 1.8t gearboxes fit the golf? i.e passat, a4, a3, cupra, octavior, vrs? different ratios? linkages and are they changerble? ? ?

seriously thinking about this, all i can do is have a look if i nick the mother inlaws micra 1.0 i can do the 368miles for 40 quid of jangly(fuel ha) happy days!

suspect i know, thats pretty much what ive limited myself to price wise, its a toy as i have a workvan and missus car! sold my 360bhp scooby last year an getting the turbo itch, on a budget this time tho...

besides if it is just the gearbox i can have it on the road for 1100 an a days work fitting the box!

i'll speak to the mechanic tomorrow an then post an update, ur right tom you take the bit out out n start the fekkin thing!

might check the cupra out too! other than that i can grab a nice vr6 highline on the road!

1200 quids burning a hole only cause im selling my r1 to pay the bills an grab me a cheap toy.

cheers people!

do you not know a mechanic you could get to look at it with you? if its just the box you could possibly have a bit of a bargin? then again you could not. im not sure what box will fit though theres a few cupras being broke in the for sale section and on ebay
