Leon 1.9 tdi FR common faults?

Hi, I'm currently looking to buy a Mk1 Leon 1.9 tdi FR+, and was wondering if there are any common faults/things to look out for on this specific car?

Also, this is my first experience of buying a diesel, so any common diesel related tips would also be appreciated.

Cheers,
Andrew.

There are lots of "common" faults with most cars mate, in reality you play a game of chance when it comes to seats - you either end up with a minter or a dog.

Things to look out for are:

water leaks from the doors/pollen filter housing
Rear wash/wipe works
engine light being on - temp sensor, glow plugs etc
turbo boosts fully throughout the rev range and doesnt drop into limp mode
engine start and stop faults - egr, asv etc
wheel bearings on the front
climate control screen function correctly

Also check the belt has been changed and service gistory is up to date

there are a few but dont let it put you off as most can be fixed both easily and cheaply.

MJ, thanks very much for your response, that's very helpful! I will be sure to look out for these things when viewing potential new cars, and hopefully find myself a minter! Cheers.

I think MJ has covered everything.
If you go to view one, go on a wet day so you can check for wet floors / wet boot area

my tip: drive it like you stole it every now and then, keeps soot away from the turbo...

(in other words, don't be afraid to venture towards 4k rpm)

Don't worry mate, I currently drive a Civic Type-R, so use to revving past 6k rpm to get the VTEC to kick in!! My problem is going to be driving a diesel sensibly and changing gear quickly. Thanks for the advice though

Sounds like me! I came from an R26 Megane so was used to revving the nuts off it. I still get carried away sometimes in the Leon but you will learn to change gear quicker when you figure out that you arent going any faster in that gear!

Found myself a decent one! Just bought a 55 reg Leon FR+ with 55k on the clock, from a private seller. No obvious problems/faults, just a scuff on the rear bumper and a scratch on the front. Other than that it seems fine. Just done a 90 mile journey (mostly on the M1) and well impressed with how the diesel engine pulls with no effort at all! Thanks for your help guys! :D
