Your garage for the MOT sound like a right bunch of scamming rip-off spakka spanner monkeys - there should be a council depot near you who can do the MOT. Because they have a fleet of vehicles to maintain they have to be able to perform MOTs, this also means the MOT service has to be open to the public.

BUT

They won't try to scam you for the usual "oh yeah mate, had to fail it cos that rear indicator bulb is flashing the wrong shade of orange" (the brand new bulbs that had been fitted that morning too) because they cannot repair any "faults" they find/claim. They have nothing to gain for failing a car that is otherwise healthy ;)

What exactly do you think he is being scammed for? All of his fails, as long as they are legit, are sound. None of them seem nit picky or construed.

New Anti Roll Bar, bushes & clamps - bushes, yes, if worn, but a new ARB? At it!

4x Coil springs severely corroded - and then on inspection are found to be fine. Hmmmm....

The ARB fail is utter nonsense, yes the bushes have perished but the bar itself is fine.

An advisory for severely corroded springs all round which are then shown to be in good condition with the original black coating intact. After all the stories of springs snapping etc it sounds to me like its a convenient bandwagon to jump on.

Good on the OP for not giving them any more hard earned, its difficult enough finding a decent garage you can trust to work on the car.

For the legit fails I agree, they are sound and as such stand. ;)

mate the anti roll bar on a lcr does have plastic sleeves and they do break meaning that if you just replace the bushes it wont work as it will be to baggy. i know because mine is fubard atm and it sounds awful. Think they are only £60ish from tps. still not an mot fail though either way

I take it you mean the powder coat type finish on the arb? That covers the entire bar?

Or are you meaning the bar itself has two small sleeves which go on where the bush sits? Just can't see any mention of them in ETKA or ELSAWIN

Yeh the bar its self has 2 plastic parts bonded too it where the bushes go. You cant get them seperatly as they are part of the bar

Don't get me wrong, the car did not deserve to pass the MOT on the tyres and track rod end and I don't have any complaints because I agree they are dangerous in the current state. The anti roll bar bushes do have play but whether its enough to fail or not I'm not qualified to say, although another garage looked at them and said he'd have given an advisory for it so I guess its just personal opinion on the matter, either way they need replacing.

by not paying the garage the £680 quoted for repairs to get MOT done, I've managed to:

£330 for 4x mid range Falken tyres (they were charging £350 for unknown budget tyres)
£55 track rod end supplied & fitted
£25 ARB bushes & clamps - will fit myself (I'm 90% certain I don't need a new ARB)
free to put the headlight into the correct position as it wasn't properly clipped in place.

The week has been a bit of a headache for me though to be honest!

If it makes you feel better it could be worse. You have obviously never owned an old/classic car!

That's where your wrong... I had a 1994 Peugeot 306 before the Leon (that I bought this time last year) and before that an 1986 Ford fiesta mk2.
both were a constant nightmare, hence I went for a car that had a good reputation and value for money leading me to believe it would at least last a little while before major repair bills came in!

They are allowed to adjust the headlights there and then to give a pass. It then just goes on the yellow advisory sheet.

I thort the same as you about the bar. I did the bushes last summer and it was ok for about a month then i got squeeking and knocking again. 99% you will need a bar, if not now in the near future.

the sleeves are in the original bushes but not newly supplied ones, i've never seen any sleeves on any leon roll bars. some have location collars to stop them moving from side to side.

its called a PRS which means any repairs such as bulbs, headlight aims or wipers etc that take less than an hour to replace/repair can be done with the customers consent, the car is failled pending the repairs,a fail notice is given but a pass issued with it once the repairs have been done there and then.

UPDATE: I put the original bulbs back in and took her back for MOT retest and guess what........ the light pattern was fine :confused:
They replaced the leaking fuel pipe and sent me on my way with an MOT Cert :D
Think I'll just refit the original bulbs prior to MOT :)

Now to get the HIDs back in................

Lucky you!!!!

Mines still in the office car park:

4 new tyre's being fitted tomorrow morning
ARB bushes and clamps ordered from Seat (arrived at dealers this morning; just got a txt), attempt to fit them tonight (all going well)

MOT and 4 wheel alignment tomorrow afternoon; hopefully I'll find out why the rear camber is so out so I can sort it out and not have to replace rear tyre's after 6-7k miles!

I feel ur pain Matty. Mine failed last month on the track rod end. The camber is out on my rear tyres as well causing them to wear quickly on the inside edges. I looked into it and there wasnt really much they could do. Said they couldnt notice any damage so would be a case of taking off parts and replacing them to see if it made any difference, ultimately leading to a new rear axle as a last resort. thought for what i'd be paying to get that lot sorted i'd just get used to getting 2 new rear tyres more often.

As another point, i didnt think you could fail a car for having a worn rear wiper. some cars dont even have a rear wiper!

Oh right... that's quite interesting yours does the same as mine; any chance you know what the camber setting for your rears is at?

Mine's going for a 4 wheel alignment check on wed but I know they won't be able to adjust the rears, just be interesting to see what the exact camber setting is on mine; used a friends camber guage and it came up with about -2.7degrees either side!

Cycling down to the Seat dealers in a sec to pick up the ARB bushes then take the car to a local garage to get them fitted tomorrow, then tyre's on Wed morning & MOT test Wed afternoon! Hopefully it'll pass this time round, if not, its off the road till next month as I wont' be able to afford any more work till next payday!

left rear is -2.15 and the right is -1.17. my other problem is that the left toe is out -1.3 which doesnt help the wear. i think mine my have been the result of sliding the rear wheel into a curb or something. seems odd that both of yours are exactly the same.

Yeah, had a 4 wheel check today; the toe and camber is out on the rears, not quite exactly the same but pretty much identical, seems very strange indeed!!! Although as I thought, there's nothing they can do about the rears, apparently gotta take it to Seat dealers and they can sort it but I'm assuming that's gonna cost far too much, although if its less than £500 it may well be worth considering to get it sorted once and for all!!! No shims in the axles either so that's that idea out the window... Maybe it was jumped by a previous owner whilst having a slab of concrete in the boot!!!
