Is the turbo definately on its way out though?
Ive been driving mine for nearly a year (9k odd miles) with the siren noise coming from the turbo and ive been told that its normal!

I have exactly the same car and it doesn't miss a beat now just over 100k too - Only ever had one glow plug failure during the two and a half years ive owned it. Best car ive ever had.

diesel 'engines' are maybe expected to go on forever but that doesn't mean every component of the car is a 'diesel' component so to speak e.g. you refer to a wheel bearing, i suspect that component is the same across the petrol/diesel range.

when i was looking into buying a leon mk1 (new) i also read the horror stories from folk that had bought new or used but decided on weighing everything up to go for it. i owned it for 4 years with no issues other than folk deciding to crash into it ... twice

i then went for the mk2 (new) and have owned that since sep 08 with no issues touch wood ............ other than someone crashing into it

as others have said, rightly or wrongly, it's still a bit of a lucky bag when you buy any consumer goods, cars are no different. your car was maybe ragged within an inch of its life during all the 59k miles it did, similarly maybe it wasn't. yes it's cack when we buy something that doesn't work properly but it doesn't mean the entire brand is cack surely? go on any car forum including the so-called 'prestige' brands and you'll see issue topics there as well.

sounds like you've had a bit of bad luck really, 2 and a half years with my fr and just had normal wear and tear and thats it

granted now the clutch is slipping, but with stage 1 revo and cat back exhaust and cone filter its not surprising

honda's are good but the VAG range is on par imo with them in terms of reliability, as said all one have their bad examples you just can't get away from it

I came from early Civics (EG's & EK's) before my Cupra R. They were a lot of fun to be honest and nothing I've owned out handled one EG that I had, braced and dropped...absolutely immense but that's nothing to do with reliability. I found the cars needed little work but as you'd expect with age (and Leons are getting older too) they needed maintaining and I replaced bushes, ARB links and a radiator on one, the engines were laid out well so fixing them wasn't an issue, 3yrs on I'm still getting to grips with the over-engineered/overly sensored nature of the Leon so in that respect the old B-Series was better or easier. I did however have 2 ECU's fail on two separate Honda's which wasn't cool, thankfully I was never stupid enough to buy a Del Sol and have the £600 roof ECUs blow too. To compare performance, well I just can't, the Leon just destroys Honda's of all types, even the mightiest S2000, the car is just insane which for me despite some leaky hoses, bad bushes and a rotted exhaust is worth the cost but that's motoring

One thing I've learnt from this car is that turbo charged cars are complicated and a small thing can cause a big problem, even a tiny air leak but fix it and you'll wonder why you ever had the hump with it to begin with :).

Anyone thats owned a sorted Civic will never forget it, Those that have never owned one will never understand...

As title reads.

Sold my 05 plate civic ep3 type R for nothing other than economy (45 mile a day commute)

6 months ago bought an 05 plate tdi fr 150 on 59k - Seneible obvious option? Economic and got some poke? well

Civic type R - CAST IRON BULLET 2 years of ownership not even a headlight blew.

Seat leon:

-Engine management light - fault code wiring loom for the glowpugs (common issue)
- the 3 hoses that link from the intercooler blew off under my wheels because of a failed clip (£3 part) - which from research is a P!ss poor design. - parts = around £200+ - metal pipe seems to cost a fortune
- Wheel bearing now making a noise - not got round to fixing yet
- Yesterday - Police sound coming from Turbo. All evidence from Seat and research points to the turbo being worn. estimated cost £600 upwards

every common fault with the leons has happened to me so far. This in total has not been an economic experience at all. The car has now only just done 63k WTF is going on? I darent show my sorry a$$ on the honda forum I used to belong to. Was told multiple times not to sell.

Think there needs to be a sticky somewhere saying how unreliable SOME seats can be.

By the way I can honestly say I drive my car sensibly. I didnt with the civic. But the leons not the same nutty reving machine.

I cruise in my leon cruising to bankruptcy.............

should have stayed jap mate.

I sold my Mr2 turbo for the LCR and its nowhere near as fun so im selling up shortly and getting a proper fast car.

Supra TT :D

Big regret.

Why's that?

I haven't owned or been in either car so there is no bias from me I'm just interested.

I had mine tuned to about 220 bhp, and for that power it WOULD take a standard LCR down, and probaby just a mapped one too,

They have attitude, they are raw, balls out hard fun, loud, harsh and very very reliable, engines barely get warm,, The whole vtec thing is a drug, race someone when your on the edge of vtec and your flying!

The sound track of a tuned vtec is awesome, utterly, And I have a Stage 2 LCR and a superb sounding one at that..

Best sounding and handling N/A car I have ever driven, The EP3 CTR..

i went out in a 55plate type R and in all honesty i couldn't understand what the big rave is about them, lots of noise and ragging but expected lots more go and didnt get it..... how it was revving i thought i was on my way to button moon but nope wasnt that smily faced as i thought i would be but then again the cupra are very heavy and also dont feel that poky at all but i brought mine for a cheap family car as my mrs was 24 and insurance insane for my jdm sti...... so cupra it was for now until some more no claims for the mrs and handy with the 2 kids......

but each to there own....... everyone has there own opinions about every car

I know very little about cars in general, but in principle I don't think its fair to compare a tuned car to a stock car but anyway thats my own principles so ignore that comment. I'm guessing the civic has a lot less weight for this to be the case is that right?

I would have thought that the mega revving that the honda's require would make the engine very hot. You learn something new every day huh. I'll youtube civic to see if I can hear it.

TBh its all about your style of driving. If you enjoy driving around like a 17yr old moron, having to bounce it off the limiter in a vain attempt to access some torque, then yeah the CTR is the car for you. Or if you like to cruise around in a sensible gear and press the accelerator when you want to go faster, then the Leon if your guy.

But there is no better feeling than spanking a vtec in a derv! And seeing the 30 year old chavs face afterwards before he has another go after seeing the smug little tdi badge on the back!

As for mileage correction as they like to call it there are ways around all the stuff they put on ecu's. Even the bmw's that sore the mileage in 1000's of different locations. You just need to know a man who can.

A proper Vtec, Ie Intergra Type R, Or Civic Type R would NOT be beaten by any Leon TDI, Possibly a HIGHLY tuned FR, But you would be needing 220+BHP

Very capable Hondas, Thats why they have such a following, and reputation for immense handling and out & out speed,

My mate has a mapped Leon Cupra, He had a blat against a CTR with just a stainless recently..... Reported back to me and was sorry to tell me the CTR wasted him...

Loud cars, Ideal for a 2nd sunday driver, Leons great for daily commutes, Kids etc... DULL as dish water IMO!

Sorry to have to say that, But I want lairy next...

I love my tdi cupra! Picks up quickly, handles like it's on rails and a decent size for the family!

Sounds like the lad is blaming people on here for his bad luck. I'm assuming you test drove the car before you bought it, and assuming either you or someone else inspected it (either a garage or dealer) so some things may have been picked up during that, but ultimately you've bought a used car so things can and do go wrong. Leons are great cars and I'm sure if you had bought a good example you wouldn't be having a moan a getting on with driving.
You mentioned economy, i average 56mpg on my way to work on a 60 or 75 miles round trip a day.

Sorry to hear you've had a bad one but hope it picks up soon
