Hey guys. I am looking at getting my car remapped and my insurance is up for renewal in a few weeks so have been getting quotes for the car with the remap etc.

Phones up my current insurer today who said that between 5-10% power gain would be no problem just a small increase but between 10-25% increase they said I would need to upgrade brakes and suspension to cope with the power or show them how the car can deal with it. Over 25% increase and they said they would not insure the car.

It's a 150BHP fr!! Has anybody ever had to deal with anything like this?? An I right in saying the suspension is similar to Cupra which obviously has more power. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Did not realise it would cause this much trouble!!

Apparently some insurance companies are becoming a lot more on the ball and are either asking for performance readouts before they insure you or are occasionaly carrying out dianostic checks on vehicles that have been involved in accidents and have remaps etc declared on their policies. Although they obviously wont be able to give an accurate bhp reading without doing a rolling road etc im pretty sure with all the information out there they would be able to give a pretty near estimate of the bhp output?

Is this true or just complete bollocks to be frank?

See thats the trouble im only 20 atm turning 21 in June and obviously insurance for somebody my age is a nightmare. Currently I am getting a great multi-car deal included with my parents and many other suppliers are 2 or 3 times the price!! I have no objection to paying the £100 extra that they are quoting for a increase up to 25% its more the fact that the woman earlier when discussing with my parents stated that they would need proof the suspension and brakes etc could cope with the extra power as I have never read about this being asked. Im going to give them a call tomorrow but just wanted some advice.

Just had a quick look on some other forums pistonheads etc and there are a few people that have had their cars inspected after accidents and even when the "finalsum" matched up on the ECU they were still able to work out the performance improvements.

Who're you insured with currently? I've not heard of a company saying that before although it makes some sense too.

Currently insured with Admiral. Got a quote from Elephant and they said the same thing about BHP % increases but not regarding brakes and suspension upgrades. After reading a **** load of threads over the past hour I cant believe some people dont declare it for the sake of like £50 tbh.

Elephant and Admiral are sister companies. Last time I checked with them, they have the same policies and Elephant did an internal price beat for me :)

You'd be better off checking with companies like Sky and Brentacre who specialise with performance/modified cars, you'll find they handle mods like remaps a lot better than the companies that mainly deal with standard stuff.

Funny thing is if you keep the standard power and just mod the brakes for better stopping they still want extra for that and others wont touch you. Cant win :(

Just wait a few months?

Phoned up insurance company tonight and was very happy with the guy I dealt with. Didnt quote an extra for fitting of K&N filter and only charged an extra £90 for the remap. Renewed tonight and am a happy man :D

Brentacre are really good. Was insured with them 6 years ago at 19 with my modified mk4 golf GT TDI, left them at 21 when i got my Cupra and went to Adrian Flux, now back with Brentacre and honestly cant fault them. Good bunch of people and are like us, interested in modified cars. Some of te workers have modified cars themselves.

Im pretty happy with the deal I got in the end tbh. Around £770 fully comp for the year with mods declared. Cant wait to reach 25 and for the premiums to drop!!
