Hey guys,

Would anyone with a diesel mind telling me how long it takes to get to operating temperature in the current weather conditions? More specifically the 1.6TDI CR.

Trying to see if I have a dodgy thermostat.
 
4 at least. Local supermarket is around 3 miles away and it just about reaches 70° by the time I get there. Takes much longer than that in the cold weather.
 
The water won't take long to reach temp... its the oil that takes longer to heat up to temperature :) I learned this from my M3 which has both water temp and then oil temp. Its the oil temp that you want to get up to temperature before giving it real beans.
 
Diesel engines take longer to warm up. In laymans terms, it's because diesel is cooler burning (it makes less heat than petrol when it burns)

I know this, but I want to try and gauge whether my engine is taking long or not.

I have a problem relating to power and mpg, which I believe is tied in with the thermostat, however I don't know if my car is taking too long to heat up or not (which can show a faulty thermostat). I did start a thread on it, but no one seems to be responding :( lol

I have no error codes, but from googling, a faulty thermostat is one of the common problems that doesn't throw up an error code.

About, 3 miles!! usually before i hit the first major road ... maybe 4-5 mins!!

wow that's quick, mine takes longer (PD170) around 15 minutes. i am driving considerately at the moment however... currently on for 620 out of this tank ;) going off on a tangent here but whats the general consensus on cooling down??? i give it around 10-15 seconds before i switch off??? should i have to or is this taken care of electronically, via the oil pump?

I let mine idle for about a minute.
 
Mine takes about 5 mins driving from work but that's about a mile of normal roads then dual carriageway.
On normal roads about 10 mins.
 
Cheers for info. I'll keep monitoring but I'm convinced my problem is related to the thermostat. On the slight off chance, the MAF sensor.
 
My CR170 takes a good 5 miles before it's fully warm, by that I mean you feel a sudden blast of warm air in the cabin when the thermostat opens.

The thermostat is a mechanical device and so isn't connected to the ECU so you won't get any error codes from it. The thermostat has wax inside it that expands and contracts with heat from the water around it. This expansion and contraction moves the valve part to allow water through, or not.

I assume you think your stat is stuck open causing your slow warm up. This is easy to diagnose by doing a cold start and feeling the coolant hose directly after the stat. If the hose gets warm before the temp needle starts to move the stat is faulty, if the hose stays cold until the temp is almost at 90 then at around 90 the hose gets hot the stat is working fine.
 
You'll see what I'm referring to, as my problem seems to be related to heat, and a sensor being read incorrectly (as far as I can tell anyway).

I think all vechicle's are like this to a point, my van for the first 30mins doesn't want to go (bit like me really) stop for 10-20 mins and it then goes much better for the rest of the day.

My wife had a Fiesta that had good and bad days, pulling out of junction's some days it would pull out fine and rev freely others it just would not go, switch it off and on it could then be fine, with the Fiesta I put it down to the ECU, just like a pc, some days they are fine and others you feel like chucking them through the window. .
