Well I think my new cluster is the red display and also a 2008 version (as per the sticker details) so hopefully this will be a straight (ish) swap. Just need to wait for my VAG Commander cable to arrive then do the usual PIN code etc. and then use VCDS to make the other changes.
Is this one of the chinese versions on eBay by any chance? Would be interesting to see if they actually do work! SKC can be handy even if it's just for key coding
The pre-facelift plug is different to later models, that's the easy giveaway when looking.
Being 2008 they should have a red display?
VC 1.4 worked when I put Leon clocks in our Altea.

i'm pretty sure red display plugs are like this

and newer white displays have a plug like this

with 1.4 you can copy/paste the immo data and don't have to waste time using the SKC through VCDS.

Don't waste your time doing it the SKC with VCDS way if it's possible this way.
Tried and tested on numerous cars.
That's for the Golf which changed mid 2006. I believe SEAT continued to use the old immobiliser system, this process worked on our 07.
If you have the new immo then your commander cable won't work anyway.
Vcds will be good for fault clearing afterwards.
In the guide is he installing an antenna afterwards?
