Hi people. I have a Y reg LC. My engine light is on so im looking to buy a code reader but i don't know what to buy.

Should i get an expensive one like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PRO-VAG-VW-AUDI-SEAT-COM-CAR-DIAGNOSTIC-CODE-READER-RESET-SCANNER-/320955524303?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4aba70a4cf

Or a cheaper one like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAG-VW-Car-Diagnostic-Scanner-Fault-Code-reader-OBD-com-16-pin-port-/200780164681?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2ebf6e2e49

Has anyone used one of these before? Cheers

I have the VS450 (your 'expensive' option) and it's a great piece of kit

Forgot to comment about the original post. While the vs450 is a decent bit of kit, and a few people have them, my only concern is that the particular Ebay link you posted was from a Chinese supplier. I'd probably prefer to pay slightly more for the same kit from a UK supplier? It's expensive to return it if it doesn't work, and Chinese supplied electronics have the potential of being 'iffy'.

I have the cheaper option and it has been fine in clearing codes and diagnostics.
Now I use my torque app and Bluetooth obd2 connector to reset/diagnose any faults that occur.

Sorry to take it off topic, but I picked up Torque and a bluetooth OBD, but it can't scan anything other than engine codes. I tried it on an ABS fault (disconnected sensor) and it hadn't got a clue. Is yours the same?

Well I've only had too use it a few times myself as I have an intermittent coolant temp sensor that keeps flagging up, so I just pop in the Bluetooth connector and scan. The fault code flashes up and u can scan tinternet for the code or clear it.
You cant change any parameters or anything like that, but is ideal if your eml light comes on after a decat or whatever.
But I thought it would have picked up your abs sensor, slimy....
Do u have the full/latest version, matey..

Hi Slimy the torque app only reads engine codes mate, cannot do codes for any other control units, i.e airbags ABS etc etc. It's great for displaying realtime info, boost, timing etc, or checking which coil if you have a coilpack failure, but it's definitely not a subsitute for VCDS or other more comprehensive code reader.

you wont go far wrong with the top one, i have one almost identical to it that ive had a few years now and has been great, yeah its no VCDS but not everybody needs VCDS. I use it for other makes now and VCDS for the VAG's.

From what the text on ebay says buddy it seems the cheaper one can only read the engine, airbag and ABS modules. The more expensive one reads all the other modules too, i.e aircon, central locking, instrument cluster etc etc. However like other people have said i would buy one from amazon or a UK based retailer on ebay just incase you need to return it.
